Thread: Today by chance I met a lady who has an autistic son. “He’s 5” she said, “and he’s never spoken”. “That’s fine”, Was all I could say, “as long as he’s happy” I added. She said she thinks he is but can’t be sure. She confessed she struggles with communication.

@PaulaMc007 It needs reporting. Corporal punishment was prohibited in all state-supported education in 1986. The prohibition was extended to cover private schools in England and Wales in 1998, in Scotland in 2000, and in Northern Ireland in 2003.

@thompoclaire @EmilioLees I agree up to a point. Some people for a diverse number of reasons, some traumatic, do not want to come out to everyone as autistic, and they feel that a more subtle “neurodiverse” is easier until they do.

Language is ever evolving and I always wonder about "Neurodiversity affirming" when we refer to autism. Should we not be saying "Neurodivergent affiming"?

@mattxiv It saddens me that a celebrity comes and says the obvious & everyone is like “this is so amazing!” Whilst in research we have all these data about socio-economic disparities & how ppl are affected, but no one bats an eyelid!

@HoppyPelican Sorry you were subjected to this. It’s not acceptable in this day and age. I tend to be very clear about what I will and will not accept beforehand, just so there’s no room for “mistake”.

@Autistic_Lia Any chewing. Breathing that’s too close for me to hear. Slurping. Basically sounds coming out of a human mouth. Ticking clocks or watches. I’m unsolicited loud music or phone call nversations within earshot. Tapping objects. I could be here all day.

@AnnMemmott I can believe it. Today I must start a fight with the local NHS ASD Pathway Lead because he appears to think that being 'creative' & 'being knowledgeable about the world' are diagnostic criteria suitable to deny an Autism assessment. Quite useless.

Not wearing a mask indoors right now is the perfect analogy for ableism. When you don't wear a mask, and you look over and see me masked, here's what I can read in your action: 1/7

No one should have to hide anything regarding their identity, because of covert or overt discrimination. Those who judge others negatively bc of their names (or anything perceived as different), are just revealing their ignorance and denying people equal opportunities.

Today is my birthday. I woke up crying. I’ll spend it alone. Health not at its best, so debating whether to even get out of bed. It would mean a lot if a few people could send me pet and/or nature photos. ❤️
