I am incredibly thankful and appreciative for the opportunity Concord Christian School provided me last season as a coach in their boys basketball program. The relationships, experiences, and lessons learned will always hold a special place in my coaching journey.
After multiple interviews with several schools and athletic directors, I made the decision a few weeks ago to join Berean Christian School. I am excited about this new opportunity and grateful for the warm welcome from the players, families, and administration.
This summer, I have been fortunate to coach the team through several camps, most recently at the Tusculum University Men's Basketball Team Camp. The camp was extremely well organized, and the Tusculum coaches and players were outstanding hosts throughout the event.
Our team finished the camp with a 5-3 record, earning wins against talented teams from North Carolina and Virginia, as well as several well-coached East Tennessee programs. More importantly than the wins and losses, we grew together as a team. Our chemistry improved, our culture strengthened, our fortitude was tested, and we took significant steps in learning to trust one another.
We still have a lot of work ahead of us, and this group is far from satisfied. They are hungry to improve, eager to compete, and determined to reach their full potential.
This team isn't interested in limits. They're hungry, they're growing, and we're only beginning to see what they're capable of. 🏀🔥

I think HS should have a shot clock in Tennessee, currently 33 states and Washington DC have fully approved or implemented a shot clock in high school basketball. For states that do not have one, there are several challenges. the overall cost to implement the shot clock equipment, training of certified personnel, and the adoption timeline will be complicated. Tennessee has experienced a 25-40% drop in localized certified officials in the past 15 years, so staffing could also be difficult.

Shot clock is on the next TSSAA BOC agenda. At a state title game, I saw a ball roll out of bounds and an extra 7 seconds roll off the game clock. No one did a thing about it. No one noticed. No seconds added back. At a state title game! Yet, somehow we can train 400+ member schools to each properly run a shot clock? Shot clocks are fun in theory. I worry about consistent execution. Plus, fan behavior is increasingly getting worse towards officiating. An insufficient shot clock operator will be a problem.

Coaches need to be consistent and intentional about reaching and connecting with kids. Give them the opportunity to change, be honest with them, be fair, and set clear expectations. If they continue to be a bad apple, then they should also understand the consequences. A team can’t be held hostage by one player, but I’ve personally seen some of those kids flip the switch and become valuable locker room guys. Sometimes the toughest players are the ones who need somebody to listen, believe in them, and show they care about them beyond just what they can do athletically.
