The context is it was voluntary. It was a narrative of what some did. There's another passage where this is more explicit in Acts 5 (see excerpt below): where Ananias sold property but held back part of it, yet claiming he donated it all. He lied about the actual proceeds wanting to appear righteous. Yet the Apostle Peter clearly says: "4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control?" There was no obligation or command for them to sell property and donate all or a portion. It was all voluntary by some wealthy members who sold some of their possessions to help the needy within their church. To turn this into a command for everyone would overturn everything else the Bible says about working, saving, etc. It is ignoring every other clear teaching of scripture. It's known as cherry picking one verse to build a doctrine while ignoring everything else. Acts 5 But a certain man named Ananias, with Sapphira his wife, sold a possession. 2 And he kept back part of the proceeds, his wife also being aware of it, and brought a certain part and laid it at the apostles’ feet. 3 But Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? 4 While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God.”

I openly condemn sin: murder, jealousy, adultery, theft, deceit, taking the Lord's name in vain, and so on. Christians are not called to accept the sin but to accept the sinner, because we are all sinners. We are to love others as Jesus loved us. This charge is a humanly impossible one. If you think the "right Christians" or the "good ones" are those that condone sinful lifestyles as "good" or "acceptable", then you found something other than those who honestly pursue Christ. My approach to a homosexual friend is not to tell him "you're going to hell", but "Jesus loves you as he loves me. We are all sinners. I am here to help you if you want help staying accountable." --This is something many men do regarding a plethora of sins... including men who fall into heterosexual adultery or who fall into the addition of pornography or drugs.

Hi Desdanpvas, you made some really good points and I wanted to share my understanding of things. I know I haven’t fulfilled all of God’s commandments. I don’t think anyone has. We have all sinned. The purpose of following Jesus is not to set a legalistic “I must obey every commandment” but to be born again. It’s in knowing that Jesus (God in human form) chose to suffer the punishments we deserve, while He Himself is perfect and did not sin. Socialism is an ideology of greed. It believes “we deserve what you have”. It demands. The opposite of charity. It facilitates oppressive regimes that has family members inform on each other to the government for (not following the state’s commandments). Are you getting the picture? The rich man went away sad because of Jesus’ parable in that he would have to sell his possessions. The man isn’t saved or condemned by collectivism but because of his personal actions. Jesus knows you and me. He personally chose to die for you and me. Cast away the ideology of “the People are God”. God’s grace isn’t found in a socioeconomic policy of socialism or capitalism. He’s much greater than that.

I've read that verse but in context of it's own passage and also of the rest of scripture, it is is no way commanding socialism or communism as the ideal economic system. Some points to consider: 1) Acts 2:44-45 is about christians within the church supporting other needy christians in their church. I'm not aware of any church that let's their needy widows or orphans starve. 2) it was members voluntary giving of one's own wealth to help needy believers, not unbelievers. No one was forced to sell their possessions and redistribute through government taxation (the definition of socialism and communism) 3) God clearly commands "anyone who does not work should not eat" 2 thess 3:10-12 10 For even when we were with you, we commanded you this: If anyone will not work, neither shall he eat. 11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you in a disorderly manner, not working at all, but are busybodies. 12 Now those who are such we command and exhort through our Lord Jesus Christ that they work in quietness and eat their own bread. 4) a lot of poverty is the result of not desiring to improve oneself through work, education, learning a trade, marrying a spouse (2 are better than one), -- alcoholism and drugs a contributing factor. 5) It's difficult to help those who refuse to take steps to positively improve their lives and God established a world with real consequences for sin. We all have limited resources. We should be judicious in how we use our excess wealth to help the truly needy, not waste it on those who continue a lifestyle of destruction and profligacy. Factor in all these biblical principles when helping others in your local church and community. Socialism is evil because it is forcibly confiscating the property earned by some to give to others who did not earn it. Stealing is one of the sins of the 10 commandments.
