I was actually shocked to learn they use PEX for everything now including hot water. I guess with the prices of copper it makes sense. My wife was so insistent on copper downpipes and guttering until we did the math at cost price on the materials and I had to put my foot down lol. I feel like augmented reality for trades makes so much sense with AI. Most people can probably use a pipe bender or a hacksaw, but being able to design from scratch is a whole skillset in itself especially when you're dealing with pressure. With the renos we did I assume they dig some holes, run some pipe. But the mains pressure was really strong, so he had to do some stuff with the mains to reduce the pressure going into the house so the pipes didn't blow inside the walls and stuff (I wouldn't have even considered that to be a factor). The outside pressure for the garden taps is incredible, it's like pressure washer level. It's the same for coding right now, systems thinking is a skill. Being able to tell an AI model what you want definitely goes over the head of vibecoders right now. It's easy to skip little details even when something seems well designed like the pressure thing.

@CtrlAltDwayne @krubner The labor aspect is pretty simple. PEX (I hate that stuff) works great for homes. Waste systems are technical, but still 8th grade level complicated. Renovations are pretty straight forward. Design from scratch can be a nightmare. I am not a great plumber though lol.

The problem is Google are too cautious. They pioneered the research for what became ChatGPT and modern AI. They were too scared to act upon it. Google could have honestly launched its own ChatGPT years before ChatGPT existed. Gemini is a great model for design, it has good taste. But the tool calling is a serious problem, it has been a problem for a while now. Even Gemini 3.1 Pro didn't land because tool calling was still broken. It's crazy to me that Google has more training data than most other labs do with Google search, YouTube and the data from its advertising business and their models are terrible for most of the things people care about. Nano Banana is incredible though. Veo is decent (although has fallen behind since), Genie 3 was a nice glimpse into the future of world models (which is where I think we'll see Google dominate first). I do believe we'll see Google eventually get somewhere in AI. They have the TPUs, the data, the talent. They just have to stop being such pussies and loosen the guardrails cause it's making them ship too slow and cautiously.

Google should be much scarier than it currently feels. That they aren’t dominating consumer AI by now is one of the strangest fumbling-of-the-bag stories in tech. How do you own half the internet and still feel late to your own future?

@thekitze For my personal projects I've learned to embrace the questionable decisions Codex makes. I measure the quality by the outcome. If it works and isn't full of security holes or perf issues, I embrace the defensive code and other things I wouldn't do if I wrote the code.
