SAT scores used to distribute normally, with a median of 500 on each section and a standard deviation of 100 points. So, a 1400 used to be a 98th percentile score. Today, a 1400 is a 92nd percentile score. Colleges want less resolution in the test and they want it to draw less fine distinctions among top performers so that they can choose who to admit based on subjective criteria. And race. National Merit was slightly above the equivalent of a 1400 when I took the PSAT and now it is like a 1520. That isn’t because National Merit has become harder to get — you had to hit the same percentile ranking then that you do today. The College Board just allocates less of the score spectrum to the top 1% of students now.

@Thomas_Carrieri Good for the game, and good when you’re watching on TV, but I miss the ambiance of attending a pre-clock baseball game. Baseball used to be leisurely. You could sit back and chat with a friend while you watched. It’s so quick now, it doesn’t feel so relaxing to go the park.

An MLB game ending in 2 hours and 16 minutes on a weeknight. The pitch clock really is the best thing to happen to baseball in decades.

@surlygopher @YIMBYLAND That’s a map of the Dallas Independent School District, which is separate and distinct from the city of Dallas. Those aren’t quite the city limits. But yeah, Park Cities are there for racism reasons. They got their first black family in 2003!

@YIMBYLAND Whenever I come across island cities that are entirely surrounded by the larger city (eg, highland park & university park) in Dallas, I feel compelled to look up their origin to see if it’s just a weird quirk of history or more of a nefarious racism/classism thing.

Today I learned the DFW metro is made up of 200(!?) different cities. Kinda blew my mind, ngl.
