@Martyupnorth I’ve done 2 custom builds in my life so far. Both took 6 months from the time the basement was dug out to moving in. One house’s quality was awful. The other was amazing! The difference was the builder standards. Both cost about the same per square foot.

How long does it take to build a single family home in Alberta, assuming that the developer has already installed power, water, sewage, etc)
Optimistic (simple design, Edmonton greenfield, good weather, efficient builder): 8–12 months.
Typical range: 10–16 months.
Realistic average (including overlaps, minor delays): 12–18 months (custom or larger homes push to 14–20 months).
Current 2026 realities in Alberta are that labour shortages persist in some trades, but building times have improved slightly in Calgary and Edmonton due to efficiencies. Supply chain issues are milder than peak a few years ago, but busy builders and winter pauses remain common.

Carney just announced another wealth redistribution scheme. This time it's a $5.1 billion "communities Strong Fund".
And get this, the first project is.....
"the new Embleton Community Centre and Park in Brampton, Ontario. This is a $64 million investment to build what will become a 175,000-square-foot community centre with a pool, gymnasium, fitness centre, childcare facility, as well as various community spaces and outdoor recreational amenities...."
