@rastokke Holding bright students back has been deliberate policy for decades. What seems like incompetence is actually the result of calculation. If your goal is equity i.e. equal outcomes, and you need to minimize costs, this is the only way to achieve it.

New EEF study finds lower-attaining students are NOT harmed by ability grouping, but higher-attaining students are held back in mixed classes. Advanced students don't get enough attention in my view. What is the goal of public education? Getting all students to a minimum competency level has to be one goal. @BillboardChris Land acknowledgements have filled the vacuum created by the removal of prayer and the national anthem from public events, in particular the beginning of public events. It's a shitty substitute.

@JCCFCanada Technically, straight white males can apply: anyone with a disabled placard would meet their threshold. It's what happens after that where it gets interesting. Does the selection process switch to merit? Or is it based on perceived level of "equity deserving"? (NDP equity cards)

Memorial University says criticism of its “equity-only” job postings, which ban straight white males from applying, is “misinformation.” But the university admits that these “equity” targets are in place. It argues that they are not unique to Memorial, and that all universities receiving funding for Canada Research Chair positions must demonstrate progress toward nationally established equity targets. I HIGHLY recommend watching this episode. David Cross is that “nice guy” who doesn’t mean any ill intentions. He is just someone who doesn’t know what he doesn’t know. This interview (especially the part mentioned below) is the perfect encapsulation of living in a bubble. You can tell that he hasn’t heard an alternative view in at least the last 20 years. It is an example of what will be the norm during to algorithms. They have no interest in the truth. They only have interest in keeping you glued to your phone. And the easiest way to do that is to feed you what you want. This goes both ways. As I’ve said before, this is a major danger.

School board officials, most of whom fled the classroom at the first opportunity, think they know better. They don't.

@DPinxton @rastokke Sidelining of public exams has a long history! ~30 years ago, NL public exam results were used to do actual curve adjustment based on regional/school results. That is - the province overwrote your school assigned grades, as well as just giving a grade on the public.

🚩Red flags: "education is too messy to measure" or "test scores don't capture what matters." These are unfalsifiable claims and blank cheques to say whatever they want is true. Don't accept these arguments.

@terrynewman I don't see how you can be Canadian and not take what the U.S. has said, done, and threatened to do personally - as a Canadian. Carney is reflecting the majority of Canadian sentiment. Those Canadians who love Trump more than they do their own country are too far gone to help.

A student skips most of the grading period and shows up three times. Each time, he spends about two minutes on a multiple choice assignment. His average is a 13. Admin: Did you call home? Teacher: Yes, no answer. Admin: Did you document at least 3 attempts? Teacher: Yes Admin: Did you offer test corrections? Teacher: For the test, he never showed up to take? Admin: Did you differentiate? Teacher: During the 3 times he was here? Admin: Did you offer tutoring? Teacher: He doesn't even show up to the scheduled class. Admin: Let’s give him a 70 and refer him to special education.
