@MrTaylorMaths2 Yes, good point. Just like how we dismiss the mean if there are extreme outliers which skew the data, so too this example would likely dismiss the mode as a suitable average

@DRoseMaths I think we'd say the mode is 12, 15 and 19. Definition being the highest frequency. We might discuss how useful a chosen average is.

@StudyMaths @taylorda01 Excellent as always. Consolation exercise, though? "I'm sorry you're not very good at factors, multiples and primes. Here's some questions on it" 😅

@amanda_spielman But is anyone really saying that it’s a stack of generic skills? Subject knowledge is very obviously essential but I don’t think subject knowledge vs teaching techniques is a trade off anyone has to make. They’re not fighting for the same space. @teacherhead

Pathway 1: Teach for a little bit Set up as consultant/coach Sell consultancy/coaching Pathway 2: Teach for as long as possible Because its more lucrative and the working conditions can’t be rivalled Pathway 2 has to become reality over pathway 1 or profession is cooked.

@MrJ_Maths I don't know whether it's specific to my context, but when students say this, they are really saying "I am struggling with this" or "I am bored of this". In which case the response from me is always "Come on, let's have a look".

“When am I ever going to use this?” I want to come up with better ways of explaining to students why we do what we do in Maths. Trying to be specific often gets the reply “I’m not going to do that” and I think being too general about skills is too vague… Thoughts, ideas…?

When you attend a maths conference but get to see speakers named Ben Sparks (@SparksMaths) and Tom Rainbow (@CoreMathsTom). Going to convince my friends it was actually an obscure Rock festival 👍

Was it worth covering then? Well I've empowered them to be able to check their payslips and utility bills, ensure they're not ripped off. I've also empowered them to approximate the angle needed when leaning a ladder against a wall. Possibly avoiding harm. Was it worth covering?

This year I have taught calculating a utility bill. We worked out tax and NI deductions for a job in their vocational area. Good engagement so worth while. Will they ever calculate their utility cost to the unit or their net pay in their lives? Probably not. It's done for them.
Graham Cumming@MathsNot

I never know why it’s always maths that gets the bad rap here. What about “do we need to learn Shakespeare? Wouldn’t it be more useful to learn how tax or budgeting works?” Because numbers, I suppose
