The goal of the far right is to drive anyone who isn't like them out of social media. I understand boycotting Twitter or FB if you feel it's the right thing to do. But I am not going to have what little voice I have in the public sphere removed on the say-so of a bunch of Nazis.

Herbert's politics are very horseshoe. His hostility to any kind of attempt at social engineering is both paleocon and vaguely Foucauldian. He's got a romantic streak that's inextricably tied to eroticism. Very impressive guy but also obviously very weird.

I do agree it’s orientalist, but for a guy who was just this weird horny Paleoconservative who did a shit ton of drugs, Frank Herbert somehow had a good understanding of MENA and Caucasus cultures just by reading the Sabres of Paradise while tripping on crazy drugs.

I was watching The Stepford Wives (1975) when I wrote this, but what I will say is (SPOILERS FOR A 50 YEAR OLD FILM) that it's genuinely very scary and original in that there's no "final girl". There's no defeating the baddies and getting away. The good guys don't win. The protagonist dies and is replaced by a robot, like all the other Stepford wives. The Stepford patriarchy has won and the film ends with new victims arriving. That's bleak as hell.

thinking about the "suburban horror" trope and how badly it's aged...oooh, it's a nice, high-trust, low-crime suburban community where kids can play on the street and everyone knows each other and a single salary can buy a nice house and garden and a car? sounds pretty good to me. oh wait...you're going to tell me that nothing is quite as it seems? that there's a dark secret lurking beneath the polished, friendly exterior? groundbreaking....
