Wish I had said this.
Robert Sterling@RobertMSterling

I don’t want to connect my coffee machine to the wifi network. I don’t want to share the file with OneDrive. I don’t want to download an app to check my car’s fluid levels. I don’t want to scan a QR code to view the restaurant menu. I don’t want to let Google know my location before showing me the search results. I don’t want to include a Teams link on the calendar invite. I don’t want to pay 50 different monthly subscription fees for all my software. I don’t want to upgrade to TurboTax platinum plus audit protection. I don’t want to install the Webex plugin to join the meeting. I don’t want to share my car’s braking data with the actuaries at State Farm. I don’t want to text with your AI chatbot. I don’t want to download the Instagram app to look at your picture. I don’t want to type in my email address to view the content on your company’s website. I don’t want text messages with promo codes. I don’t want to leave your company a five-star Google review in exchange for the chance to win a $20 Starbucks gift card. I don’t want to join your exclusive community in the metaverse. I don’t want AI to help me write my comments on LinkedIn. I don’t even want to be on LinkedIn in the first place. I just want to pay for a product one time (and only one time), know that it’s going to work flawlessly, press 0 to speak to an operator if I need help, and otherwise be left alone and treated with some small measure of human dignity, if that’s not too much to ask anymore.

Donald Trump is threatening to destroy a "whole civilization… never to be brought back again," but at least Merrick Garland kept his investigation from looking too political.

TRUMP STARTED A DAMN WAR WITH IRAN SO HIS KIDS, ERIC AND DON JR, COULD GET RICH SELLING DRONES IN THE MIDDLE EAST!!! On top of that, he wants $1.5 trillion MORE taxpayer funds for his war, but nothing for American families. Y'all were mad about Hunter Biden selling a painting.

“As I have tried to warn people many times before, the Trump family motto is basically, ‘Fuck you, stop me’. It is of course not limited to Trump, the self-dealing extends to his Cabinet as well. When you consider all of the economic arbitrage from this illegal war in Iran and Trump’s disastrous tariff policies, don’t sleep on the fact that Howard Lutnick’s sons, who took over for him to run Cantor Fitzgerald when he joined the administration as Commerce Secretary, began buying up tariff-related debt for pennies on the dollar a year ago, when their father helped put these trade policies in place. How much money will they make by gobbling up distressed assets now that Trump is tanking the global economy due to rising oil prices? Especially in Southeast Asian markets; the hotels, tech companies and manufacturing businesses that are now suffering due to soaring energy costs may find themselves in the portfolios of these unscrupulous scions. This is akin to a global shakedown at the hands of a single mafia family (Russian ties notwithstanding, Putin is benefiting immensely, as he always seem to do under Trump’s policies) destroying the world’s economy to benefit their own profit margins. The human suffering caused by it all doesn’t even register to them. Howard Lutnick already proved himself quite immune from empathy in his many years of looking the other way for his next door neighbor, Jeffrey Epstein’s sex-trafficking operation; continuing to do business with him and travel to his private island. Not to mention Lutnick’s total lack of empathy and compassion in the days after 9/11, when he stopped the paychecks for his 658 employees who had perished in the horrific terrorist attacks. The twenty five years since have only calloused a cold heart further. If you want Trump to stop sending troops to Iran you have to make him a better offer. He is transactional and the only thing he is concerned with is his own self-interest. Our enemies understand this and our allies do now as well. The more money that this war makes for those on the inside of this administration, and his inner circle at Mar-a-Lago, the longer it will last and the greater the toll will be for Iran and American forces. They do not care about the consequences of their actions - and so far there hasn’t been any of real significance. We must change that and demand accountability.” open.substack.com/pub/noelcasler…

The President of the United States is threatening to commit war crimes and wipe out a "whole civilization" — all because he started a disastrous war of his own making and had no plan and no strategy for how to end it. This is abhorrent, and the American people do not support this. Trump's recklessness is needlessly putting our brave service members in harm's way, destroying America's global standing, and making life even more unaffordable for the American people. We must all stand against this and oppose funding this illegal war of choice.

Ronan Farrow, the reporter who broke the Weinstein story, spent 18 months investigating the CEO behind ChatGPT. He got a secret 70-page memo from the company's own top scientist. First item on the list: "Lying." Farrow and Andrew Marantz interviewed over 100 people and obtained two documents that have never been public. The first is that memo. Ilya Sutskever, OpenAI's top scientist at the time, put it together in fall 2023: workplace chat logs, HR files, screenshots taken on personal phones to dodge company tracking. He told a fellow board member, "I don't think Sam is the one who should be holding the button." The second is over 200 pages of private notes kept by Dario Amodei during his years at OpenAI. (Amodei now runs Anthropic, a competing AI company. The notes were written while he was still at OpenAI.) His conclusion: "The problem with OpenAI is Sam himself." OpenAI publicly promised that 20% of its computing power would go to the safety team, the people whose entire job was making sure AI doesn't become dangerous. Four people on that team said the real number was 1-2%, running on the oldest, worst machines they had. When the reporters asked to speak with a researcher working on long-term AI safety, an OpenAI spokesperson said: "What do you mean by 'existential safety'? That's not, like, a thing." The team was shut down before it finished. The pattern stretches back before OpenAI. At Altman's first startup Loopt, employees asked the board to remove him as CEO twice. At Y Combinator, the startup program he ran next, Paul Graham privately told colleagues Altman "had been lying to us all the time." A board member described him as having "a strong desire to please people in any given interaction, and almost a sociopathic lack of concern for the consequences of deceiving someone." A Microsoft executive, someone with a financial stake in OpenAI doing well, compared him to Bernie Madoff. Altman denied being deliberately deceptive in over a dozen conversations with the reporters. He called his shifting commitments "well-intentioned adaptation." This drops while OpenAI prepares to sell shares on the stock market for the first time, possibly later this year, at a price that would value the company at up to $1 trillion. They just raised $122 billion in private funding at a value of $852 billion. Revenue is about $25 billion a year, but the company expects to lose $14 billion this year and doesn't plan to turn a profit until 2029. The same week this came out, a separate report said OpenAI's own chief financial officer told colleagues she didn't think the company would be ready to go public in 2026. OpenAI's response: "anonymous claims and selective anecdotes sourced from people with clear agendas." The 70 pages Sutskever compiled and the 200 pages Amodei wrote had never been reported on before this investigation.

Absolute horror on Al Jazeera. Live footage confirms the US and Israel are actively following through on threats to bomb civilian railway lines in Iran. Rescue workers are desperately pulling innocent commuters from the wreckage. These war crimes are sickening.

I've taught European history for 30 years. Americans have always asked me how the Holocaust was possible, how Germans could have enabled a madman reveling in mass murder to carry out his plans. Now we can see in real time how this is enabled; now we have front-row seats.
