History doesn’t repeat itself, but it rhymes. Many of the AfD’s strongholds in this election were already strongholds of its far-right predecessor party, the Republikaner, which entered state parliament in 1992. However, this electoral persistence varies across space. 🧵

@MichaelImre We find that German state governments are more likely to be incumbent cabinets, in particular when there was no PM replacement. Bargaining duration is also shorter when the negotiating parties are the incumbent parties, but this effect is weaker when there was a PM replacement /2
