Based on reports from the ground + forecasts, it seems we’re barreling toward a once-a-decade level of Masters this year with it being dry, bouncy and perfect after a dry spring. Windy on Thursday. All the ingredients are in place. This confluence of factors is so fleeting!

Is it time for the pros to play 700 yard par 5’s? I’m thinking yes! Today they did and it was awesome. The 18th hole into the wind was playing 720 yards! And it was great. It asked the pros to hit two great woods and then a mid iron. They struggled to make birdie and that’s okay. Par 5’s shouldn’t always be automatic birdies and eagles. Props to the Valero Open and TPC San Antonio. Quietly it’s become one of the most fun and interesting PGA Tour events.

If you only know Tropicana Field as a joke, you never really knew it at all. The roof, the catwalks, and the quirks are all easy jabs. But after this past year, I think a lot more people finally understood what Rays fans have known for a long time: it may not have been glamorous, but it took care of this team. And it took care of us, too. Seeing the roof torn apart revealed so much more than a baseball field underneath. It showed what had been taken away, the part that made it feel safe, familiar, and ours. Maybe that’s why so many of us loved it exactly as it was. It’s not perfect, but it’s ours. And while I’m excited for the future, after having to live without it, I think a lot of us are going back with a deeper appreciation for what she means to us. Thank you to everyone who brought her back, and then some. See you tomorrow, sweet dome. #RaysUp

The rewards program thing is an example of following data vs CEO common sense. The data says sell people out front on the way in to join the rewards program. More LTV. Blah Blah. The common sense says people will stop coming and it will come back to bite you years later!

I walked into Cabela’s tonight for the first time in 5 years. I notice the sign also says Bass Pro. Huh. Whatever. I walk in and they say “welcome to outdoor world!” Uh, ok. Three names? Wasn’t the merger a decade ago? There are more employees than customers. Total crickets. 77,000 empty square feet. The dude at the entry gives me the hard sell to join their rewards program, while the outside air is still on my neck. I’m just here for a knife dude. I won’t be back for another 5 years. I wrangle from his grasp. As we go to leave they push me to join their rewards program yet again. What a trainwreck. This is what poor management looks like.
