It is not in the best interest of SANEF to advance a perception that journalism is above scrutiny when it comes to crime and national security. It is in the interest of credible journalism to always welcome scrutiny so as to stay legitimate in the eyes of the public. This is so because embedded journalism exists. An example lies in the internationally renowned BBC, CNN and many Euro-American journalists who were part of the Weapons of Mass Distraction lie that was peddled to invade & destroy Iraq. Even in their favourite commission, the Zondo Commission, evidence was led that journalists were on the payroll of State Security. SANEF, if they care in anyway for credible journalism, should be joining the General in calling for rooting out of rouge journalists from their ranks. They should in fact say to the public, we will, on our own, in fact, conduct investigations as News24 etc. to the allegations of rouge journalism. Not be wholly defensive. In addition, they should say they also welcome criticism not to use leaked classified information to undermine or frustrate criminal investigations. They should accept that national security is important and can never be undermined just so they can print papers.
