100% detection and quantification of SARS-CoV-2 with PBM-HALE, in 1 minute of exhaled breath, requires forced expiration and gives Ct's as low as 25.8. We have updated our preprint with the interim data from our Brazil study 1/n twitter.com/PulmoBioMed/st…

Our Pre-print on exhaled breath detection of COVID-19 and bacteria from your lung. TL;DR summary: you do not emit any virus if you are infected, have symptoms, and are breathing in a relaxed fashion. This DOES NOT mean COVID-19 isn’t airborne 1/n medrxiv.org/content/10.110…

@mbeisen And yet the amount of scorn poured on those of us that, like yourself, see medRxiv and bioRxiv as the destination knows no bounds…

The entire science journal system should be scrapped - every single bit of it - and any institution that continues to participate in it, support it or pay for it is doing a grave disservice to science and society.

🔥 Researchers have discovered a hidden talent of mast cells: they can capture and use another type of immune cell called neutrophils. This surprising discovery sheds new light on how our immune system works, particularly during allergic reactions. 1/

@ukhadds To us mechanistic scientists, yes. To the communicators to the lay public however, it’s essential not to bias the message in favour of one or other transmission pathway.

@DocMoschos Exhaled aerosol becomes alkaline due to bicarbonate evaporation (via CO2). Understanding this process helps to design more effective mitigation strategies (eg reduce acid content of air reduces risk) We’ve done a lot of research on this you can read here: nature.com/articles/s4146…

Exhaled aerosol acidification, virus spike protein evolution which affects pH susceptibility & consequently endosomal stability altering upper vs lower airway infection means one simple thing: we must rely on blocking BOTH fomites & aeorosols. It’s not one or the other.

Interesting to see the terms nebulisation (aerosol generation) and aerosolisation (aerosol suspension period) to be used by the aerosol community - when the biomedical/virology community still conflate the terms (and still can’t get their head around droplets vs aerosols).

1/ Wastewater data shows evidence* of #H5N1 in 5 US states over the past month! Testing at 180 US sites found no evidence for the virus. How does this compare to states w/ known dairy cattle and poultry infections? A 🧵 @jkbren @MOUGK @globaldothealth @Verily @WastewaterSCAN

These are my brothers. My oldest (far left) brother raised me when my parents worked multiple jobs. My older (second to the left) brother pushed me on the track & helped me become a better version of myself. My little brother (far right) taught me how to be a big brother--the best gift. No part of younger me would have ever imagined that us four boys, who lived in a family shelter home in 2001 & a tiny studio motel in 2009, would make it to a place like @Harvard. You guys gave me the opportunity to pursue higher education when each of you went to work right after high school. Thank you. 3/4

@GrowingBs Catalytically. An average #asthma patient needs 16 healthcare visits to get to the right treatment. We are developing a test to cut this down to 1 visit, also slashing costs from asthma attack ER use & hospitalisation. Pharma don’t need this, reimbursers & patients do.

@DocMoschos @DocMoschos Indeed, lack of funding hinders rare disease innovation. Reimbursing orgs could boost innovation and lower costs. How do you think this could impact the healthcare landscape?

#RIS2024 - lack of funding is slowing down innovation for rare disease. Investors down fund out of compassion. If you solve the rare you can cure the common. Government can help. I wonder, would reimbursing organisations benefit from innovation through reduced cost?

Innovation starts with patient need 💯 #ris2024 And in #CysticFibrosis we need more work on dealing with the pathogens and understanding colonisation vs infection

From the department of the bleeding obvious: raw unpasteurised milk is bad for you - and now with a risk of H5N1 flu. I’d argue for aerosol protection and PPE in dairy farms and dairy factories at this point.
Dr. Angela Rasmussen@angie_rasmussen

Here's where we are: Asymptomatic cows shed H5N1 into the milk supply Pasteurization inactivates the virus and renders it non-infectious @US_FDA & @USDA showed inactivation by inoculating eggs with PCR+ dairy products BUT DO NOT DRINK UNPASTEURIZED MILK fda.gov/food/alerts-ad…
