I took my 11 year old to her checkup this morning and the nurse asked me to step out of the room for a moment. I politely declined and she said, "It's just for a moment." And I told her, "No thank you, given all the stories about children being abused my husband and I decided to never leave our children alone with anyone, even medical providers. Anything you need to do or say you can do with me in the room." She looked all miffed and just left, no idea what her plan was but she didn't feel the need to continue it with me present and that makes me even more suspicious?? When she left my daughter thanked me for not leaving, she's already shy about the doctor, her eyes got so wide when the lady asked me to leave.

@SandyofCthulhu But Spinal Tap though: the greatest of all parodies (Including the mighty Airplane!) I genuinely didn’t realise it was a parody first time around. The Eighties were an awful time for rock music. And it is genuinely hard to tell from Some Kind of Monster.

If the audience doesn’t know it’s a parody, then either you failed in your task (Watchmen) or you lied and are gaslighting yourself (Starship Troopers). An awesome parody loves the genre it’s mocking (Shaun of the Dead) and makes its intent clear (Airplane).

@Boldizar @SandyofCthulhu I don't consider Dr. Strangelove a satire, it's a dark comedy in my book. It's too. Verhoeven always walks between satire and straight, I'd call it dry satire.

Verhoeven wasn't gaslighting himself. (His daughter is my son's godmother). But there's a difference between satire and parody. You're right that parody has to be over the top. But satire can be subtle, and the best satire is right on the boundary where you're not sure whether it's satire. There are people who watched Dr. Strangelove straight, but that doesn't make it a bad satire. I just published a sci-fi thriller that won a big satire prize along with the Locus. Professional reviewers see the satire, but many Amazon and Goodreads reviews don't. I wrote it to still be entertaining as a straight SF thriller, and I think I mostly succeeded, but the single biggest source of negative reviews is that it "goes over the top." At some point, you need to pick your audience, and I prefer the one that can read a book on two levels at once.

@SandyofCthulhu Nah. Plenty of properties start off as parody but develop into genuine products. Dragon ball, one punch man, invincible, the boys, the Orville, Scream.

@MikeTaylorShow @Academy With a quick search I see he wears size 17. As a person who has worn size 16 Xtra wide since age 15-16, I can guarantee they aren't from there. Only thing I've ever found close to that size is a size 15 pair of Crocs. All other shoes are capped at 13. Shoe shopping is fun.
