Tech founders: here’s a useful new technology we spent our own money and time on. It’s still new and will need improvement. If it doesn’t work we lose our money Doctors: this doesn’t look like the technology i use every day (and have no idea how it actually works). Also, how dare you make a nice launch video?

Yes i have heard of trauma In the case of preventative/quantification of disease risk, MRI and US are better and safer modalities. Developing these for better and more accessible detection of early signs of disease seems like a good thing to me CT has its use cases too. In fact its better for early lung cancer detection in high risk populations

@DrAdamBat Or founders have never been good at explaining their product?

Unfortunately doctors have never been good at understanding new technologies

@DrAdamBat Liability + overdiagnosis. Low-res scans flag tons of benign-but-indeterminate stuff. Even doctors who suspect it's nothing escalate (malpractice, patient pressure), and screening finds 'cancers' that'd never harm you, see South Korea: thyroid dx up 15x, total deaths unchanged.

@DrAdamBat Good point. After all healthcare is probably the only sector where faxes and pagers are still in use😂 🦕

@DrAdamBat This is the best point bc it’s just a fact that doctors don’t do well without point by point protocols and known commodities

@thirdpairdemon If we do the later, the former becomes more probable. Let those who want to get scanned do it if they want

@DrAdamBat The debate isn’t “does this new imaging technology work”, but rather “should we now start imaging everyone frequently without an indication”? This new imaging technology isn’t higher fidelity or anything, it’s just fast without radiation.

@DrAdamBat If these companies want to take on the responsibility/liability of monitoring incidentalomas vs just telling the person to go talk to their PCP (aka dumping) I’m all for it!

@jasonryanmd True but to be consistent about evidence we should look at evidence of harm as well Agree we need data for effectiveness and safety though

@DrAdamBat Also fyi this is a cohort study where only 50 people had incidental findings. Interesting sure but hardly a clinical trial that proves anything definitively.

Subjective estimation of sleep is actually not the best indicator of how good your sleep is Partial sleep deprivation shows up in metabolic indicators of stress before we perceive them My favorite well designed study on this topic:

The Economist makes a good point on sleep trackers: Just as the only good bottle of wine is the bottle you enjoy, the best measure of how well you slept is if you wake up feeling rested. A watch, ring, or those fancy new health tracking earrings are no substitute.
