An important lesson from 1930s Germany, Bosnia, and Rwanda: Bloodshed and genocide doesn’t start with concentration camps. It starts with the normalisation of the abnormal, attacks on institutions, and the vilification & dehumanisation of minority groups.
Adam Wagner KC@AdamWagner1

After the Charlottesville far right marches where Trump said there were “very fine people” on both sides, I with @EachOtherUk made a short film with survivors of three genocides called The Warning Signs. The signs are there; we just need to read them

“I think the British public wants to be disassociated, not just in principle but in practice, from Donald Trump’s aggression against the Iranian people” Former RMT General Secretary Mick Lynch believes the UK should not allow the US to use its military bases “at all” #Newsnight

1/2. Notice that after losing the war Trump threatens his allies rather than Russia — even though Russia quite literally helped Iran defeat the US and he knows it.

Says the Ozemprick who accuses Brussels of interfering in elections. While praising far right right leaders to the skies, not a word of criticism of Russia, plenty for Ukraine. We should not be sending the King to the far right authoritarian political cesspit that Trump Vance are creating

After the Munich speech, Greenland threats, & Iran shitshow we’re way past the point where we can regard the US under Trump and fawning minions like Vance as anything but adversaries to Europe. Right now, even Putin seems more sane. This BS is all for US domestic consumption.
David Aaronovitch@DAaronovitch

I'm struggling to recall any such kind of intervention by a US president or vice president in another country's democratic elections in the last half century.

Joe Biden was forced out of the race for showing a fraction of the cognitive impairment that Trump is showing now
bob hanaka@bobhanaka

@TheAtlantic @RadioFreeTom For all the talk about Biden and his mental acuity, a quick review of Trump's latest public appearances should concern everyone, and at least result in a visit for observation. #dementia

No shit, Sherlock. Trump said early in this conflict that US-Israeli strikes killed Iran’s moderates they hoped might take over. Now geniuses like Vance ask where the moderation is. ‘Vance then says: "You have some crazy people at the fringes who are leaking anonymously.."’

"You don't hit schools, you don't hit energy sources, you don't hit bridges: those are war crimes." UN humanitarian chief Tom Fletcher criticises actions in the Iran war and says leaders have chosen 'game show gambling' over humanity by hitting civilian infrastructure.

✅ Max Hastings is bang on. The Iran war is reckless, irrational, and not in Britain’s interest. The UK should stay out, even if the US is involved. Supporting it risks dragging Britain into a long, unwinnable conflict. Air strikes won’t solve Iran. You can’t bomb your way to stability. Escalation leads to deeper involvement. That directly challenges the current narrative of “limited”, “targeted”, “defensive”.

This is such a dangerous escalation by Starmer, taking us further into an illegal & reckless war and demonstrating exactly the risk of mission creep that many have warned about, making us all less safe

To think, some people voted for the dismal Starmer thinking he’d actually reduce barriers between countries. Starmer is dangerously discrediting the centre-ground with his ineptness, much as Macron has done in France. theguardian.com/politics/2026/…

It’s significant that someone as experienced as Jonathan Powell said Iran had made a serious offer. Oman already said a deal was close. Instead Trump and Israel drag the region into a war of choice to help Netanyahu get re-elected and stay out of jail. theguardian.com/world/2026/mar…

You want the NATO allies to join you in a war you started without ever consulting these allies about the war or explaining your war aims. We’re meant just to meekly fall in line. You recently supported a US invasion of a NATO ally (Denmark/Greenland) but now you want these same allies to join your war. Your president disparaged and misrepresented the role of NATO allies in Afghanistan. But now you want them to join with you again in a war of your making. You went to war with Iran without a thought of how to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and without involving your allies in the matter. But now you want the NATO allies to bail you out, even though there’s still no plan for Hormuz. You want the NATO allies to join you in a war in which you still cannot articulate the endgame. Or what victory would look like. You went to war thinking the Iranian regime would quickly topple, that Tehran would not attack the Gulf States or close Hormuz. Why would we align with such Epic Stupidity? You and other know-nothing blowhards started this war all on your own. You can finish it on your own. If you’re able to …
Lindsey Graham@LindseyGrahamSC

Just spoke to @POTUS about our European allies’ unwillingness to provide assets to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning, which benefits Europe far more than America. I have never heard him so angry in my life. I share that anger given what’s at stake. The arrogance of our allies to suggest that Iran with a nuclear weapon is of little concern and that military action to stop the ayatollah from acquiring a nuclear bomb is our problem not theirs is beyond offensive. The European approach to containing the ayatollah’s nuclear ambitions have proven to be a miserable failure. The repercussions of providing little assistance to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning are going to be wide and deep for Europe and America. I consider myself very forward-leaning on supporting alliances, however at a time of real testing like this, it makes me second guess the value of these alliances. I am certain I am not the only senator who feels this way.

My latest in @ArabNews: Lebanon is once again paying the price for a war it did not choose — shaped by proxy strategies that serve Iran's interests far more than Lebanon's people. 800,000 displaced. 700 killed in under two weeks. And a humanitarian system already at breaking point. Aid matters. But so does honesty about who chose this war — and for whom. 🔗 arab.news/p4vvp #Lebanon #HumanitarianCrisis #MiddleEast #ProxyWar #UAE @AGDAUAE

In the dramatic circumstances of war, information must guard against the risk of turning into propaganda. It is every journalist's duty to verify the news, so as not to become a megaphone for power. They must show the suffering that war always brings to populations, which entails showing the face of war and recounting it through the eyes of victims.
