Ta da::! The #nonlexicals research team cordially invites you to an introductory video about non-lexical vocalizations, the exciting non-word sounds that play with the boundaries of what we treat as officially 'language'. youtu.be/HpzmnBNfloY

After 5 weeks of illness I am trying to work up pride that I edited a couple of sentences today. And posted a tweet. Look at me go.

Apparently craving and chomping ice counts as a kind of pica. Not something I expected to tick off on my bingo sheet.

@EMdoesCA Late to the party. I make transcripts in Word, transport those to InDesign (11pt) and then add images, usually to the side or at the bottom. I export these as a JPEG and submit them as images either in the Word doc or separately depending on what journals require.

#emca Could you share your process for preparing transcripts for publication? Especially if that is transcripts->images! I'm thinking we should make a tutorial. Will message for citing you if I can get time together to make something proper. Meanwhile the tread is a start.

@EMdoesCA Transcripts with images and embedded alt-text for readers. I convert text to images in MS Word using the paste as image option as it retains a good deal of image quality and allows for alt text to be added.

@charles_antaki Thank you! I will think about it, mostly not sure if I have time to do something properly useful but I will try!

Just to say, thank you all so, so much for your responses! I am pondering how best to summarize and what to test.

@avid_apathy <3 this exactly why I'm asking. I've seen a few publications go by where the fonts are completely different sizes for transcripts; this is clearly something we've got to figure out rather than get adjusted on the proofing side.

@EMdoesCA the default img output (e.g., from 300dpi to 500-600dpi as is requested by some journals). Sizing is a tricky measure that I haven't developed a consistent workflow for yet. Curious to see how others do it 🙂

@hannah_pelikan Also curious how Latex-using journals might differ in their auto processing than 'submit word/pdf' journals.

@hannah_pelikan Fixed positioning of pixels anyway, works for me. Cool! This was what I used to do, and I had one bad experience and was convinced this was the reason why. So maybe it was a fluke, if it's been working for you.

@DrSarahJWhite I feel very silly, but how do you manage spacing for overlaps? I have always wondered this with table users, and wasn't sure how it survived proofing

@avid_apathy Ooh I've never tried through powerpoint! If you send to pdf I've been HORRIFIED at the compression, it's hideously grainy.

@EMdoesCA I recently noticed that underlinings can go missing at random when pasting transcripts as images. So you prolly want to make sure you take screenshots but zoom in enough to retain a reasonable resolution. If you do img export through PPT you can edit your registry to increase 1/2
