"Startups don't have a budget for recruiting" is the laziest VC take. Our customers are small pre-seed startups. They pay us because we actually fill the role. Every single recruiting agency they tried before was more expensive and didn't deliver. Budget exists when results do.

Layoffs in big tech are actually the best thing that has ever happened to startup hiring. The relative risk of joining a 4-person startup vs joining @Meta and hoping you're not in the 20% they cut next quarter has completely changed. And even if you survive the layoff, being there while it happens is brutal.

@fordsmith Facts. The ability to write things down and in retrospect see if the decisions were high quality. That is the counterpoint to the need to do to be able to make decisions really quickly.

@Edmund_Works Speed matters, but only if you're good at recognizing and correcting mistakes quickly. Fast stubborn decisions can be expensive. 😅

Decision frequency beats decision quality every single time in a startup. The only thing that matters is how fast you make decisions and whether you have the self-awareness to know when you got it wrong.

I catfished my cofounder with an AI agent on @ycombinator's matching platform. My agent found him, wrote a message, and we met for coffee. When I told him the agent wrote the message, not me, he just said "fuck, that's really cool, show me how you built that". I showed him the earliest version of Superposition.ai. Three weeks later we were cofounders. Still the best recruiting case study I have.

Founders will spend months picking a font for their landing page and then hire their first engineer by texting their college roommates.

Hiring someone from a company nobody's heard of who's shipping super interesting stuff nights and weekends is ALWAYS a better bet than hiring someone from a name-brand company. They have all the optionality in the world and decided to go with you. Ask why they chose you. Really ask.
