Who'd have thought that after all the episodes over the years that we have never covered Tolkien's Middle Earth as a series , that's about to be remedied. Join Drisky & Kingy as they get into the high fantasy groove. But only after second breakfast. retrogamingdailyshow.libsyn.com/373-tolkiens-g…

@Heasmo Yes, something to be wary of on the actual Playdate screen, dither flashing. The player characters move a lot, so they would suffer from it. #dither-flashing" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">help.play.date/developer/desi…

@EricRetro Love the animated shadow blobs. Any reason why they didn't get the cross hatched treatment?

@nostalgicrealms I've dabbled with pixel art since the 8-bit days but never considered myself a pixel. However, what has surprised me in recent years is that you can get better with practice, and perhaps that's easier now because it's so easy to find reference images.

David - Nostalgic Realms - Lair of the Leviathan
I was looking through my old art and I thought I'd make this post as I have seen a lot of fellow gamedevs asking 'how to get good at art' and thinking about taking shortcuts using ai art for their games. I was thinking, why are so many devs using ai art? Is it because it's better? Or it's an easy shortcut? Is it possible that they don't have confidence that they will ever reach a good enough level with their own art? I started learning gamedev and pixel art later in life. At first I had absolutely no idea what I was doing (see exhibit A from 2019!) Slowly I practiced, I was getting a little bit every month and the things I was trying to draw actually started looking like the ideas I had in my head. I learned that art really is a grind, but if you are determined it isn't impossible. If people want to use ai that's totally up to them but I think they are potentially not only robbing their game of visual character but also they are robbing themselves of whatever potential they might one day achieve by putting the work in. Am I the greatest artist? No way! But I think I'm way better than I was and I'm happy I put all those years into learning. I'm also happy that my game has it's own identity and character, something that is different. If I can do this from where I started I think anyone can.

@EricRetro I've just scratched the surface of development (basically a simple "hello world" type thing), but what intimidates me the most is my complete lack of graphics ability. Maybe I'll get ambitious someday :)

@RustySabre It's a lovely little device, and really enjoyable to develop for. Have to say though that the size of the screen can be a problem if a game's graphics are too small. The SDK guidelines do say that developers should be careful of this.

@EricRetro Actually, I've been quite impressed with what people do on the machine. And everything I've seen so far indicates yours should be among the best!

@RustySabre Haha, that's fair enough. I wondered if you thought that doing it on the Playdate might not work so well. Other than the tiny screen of course! 😄

@EricRetro Actually, I think it will play great (hence the "though I suspect it will"). I was just trying to post something other than a simple "looks great!" :)

@EricRetro Honestly, even if this didn't play well (though I suspect it will), this is one of the best looking PlayDate games I've seen!
