Lesotho 🇱🇸 wants to renegotiate its water deal with South Africa 🇿🇦 . Through the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, water flows from Lesotho to Gauteng, including Johannesburg. Right now, Lesotho earns about $200 million a year, around 10% of its economy. But the deal was signed in 1986, and Lesotho says it’s outdated. They now want higher royalties and better compensation. Talks are expected to begin in April 2026.

Besides, article 18(1) of the LHWP treaty states: "The provisions of this Treaty shall be reviewed at intervals of twelve years, calculated from the date of signature hereof or at such other intervals as the Parties may agree on."
