@Chris_arnade @FarFromSubtle When I lived in Tokyo, I would sometimes cross against the light but only if there were no children around. Because children there might assume that if I went, it had to be safe for them too.

People claim the “Japanese wait for a crosswalk even when they don’t have to” thing is an overblown myth. No. I just waited 30 seconds with an elderly couple at this cross walk, about one lane wide, at 6am with zero cars around. Happens every day in all Japanese cities (outside of central Tokyo)

This is not a one off video. Japanese road crews are just like this. No matter the job it seems you will find people taking pride in their work here like the craftsmen they are. Even better, the roadwork is often done overnight with no disruption to the neighbourhood traffic.

I worked at the production company that animated this. I wasn't in the animation department but I went to all the Friday viewings of the season progress. It struck me that almost nobody ever laughed at these things. Not a chuckle in the room despite an ample beer supply.

I left after a few years of working there... then a year later they declared bankruptcy out of the blue and locked my old work buddies out of the office. Crazy times.

They also made "The Wild" during Disney's tiff with Pixar. It was supposed to put Canadian animation studios on the map but nobody at the studio was excited even if the press was. All the animators would talk about was Pixar like they hoped this would get them a job there.

Our 2nd Japan trip a young ramen shop employee squatted next to our table, took our order and money in the best english she could muster, then went to the front and bought the tickets from the machine (which we had walked right past). She treated us like toddlers and I loved it.
