Ivo Grigorov on What It Actually Takes to Bring Traditional Finance Onchain In this episode of DROPS, I sit down with @ivo_grigorov, CEO of @RealFinOfficial, to discuss what it really takes to bridge traditional finance and crypto. Ivo’s story is equal parts founder grind and systems thinking: a finance obsessive who saw how much of global banking still runs on manual bureaucracy, and decided to rebuild it onchain, with institutions as the target. A founder’s life: 16-hour days, big goals, and real sacrifice Ivo doesn’t glamorize the founder’s life. His days are “more like 14 to 16” hours, fuelled by “lots of caffeine… a lot of coffee and some Red Bull.” But for him, the intensity is the cost of chasing a goal that’s almost absurd in scope: “transition the whole financial world onchain.” That ambition comes with an uncomfortable honesty. He admits he doesn’t see his daughter much, a line that lands because he doesn’t romanticise it. “It’s a sacrifice… actually a great sacrifice,” but he frames the burden the way a lot of founders do when they’re deep in it: the mission, the team depending on him, the people who have already invested, and all of it becomes the reason he keeps going. “Half dreamer, half crazy” When asked who he is, Ivo shrugs: “I’m probably kind of a dreamer or a crazy person.” He’s been “fascinated by finance” for as long as he can remember. He studied in London, earned a master’s in banking and finance, and worked on the institutional side: central banks, private banking, and a fund-of-funds managing $1.2B. His edge is that he genuinely enjoys the mechanics: the design of instruments, how value transfers, and how a structure creates incentives and cash flow. And part of that “fire in the belly,” he says, started early. At 12, he was sent to boarding school, constantly moving, constantly adapting. He describes it as learning to build relationships quickly, taking chances, and living without a fixed sense of home. “It’s never the end until you give up,” he says. The turning point In 2017, Ivo noticed Bitcoin becoming mainstream and started reading, but the real “game changer” moment came while structuring a large deal in traditional finance. He was working on a wholesale guarantee scheme of around $100 million and drowning in bureaucracy and paperwork when it clicked: “Holy [__]… you can do that with a smart contract.” In his mind, that entire term sheet: the conditions, the flow, the enforcement, etc., could be turned into code. That’s the recurring theme across the episode: crypto isn’t magic. It’s a new operating system for coordination, execution, and trust. First attempt: Credefi, and the lesson that “RWA” is mostly a trust problem Before Real Finance, Ivo and his co-founder launched @credefi_finance in 2020. The idea was simple and, in hindsight, ahead of the narrative: connect crypto liquidity to real-economy lending, using receivables and tangible assets as collateral. They weren’t even calling it “RWA” yet, but the thesis was already there. Credefi worked “fairly successfully,” and is still ongoing, but it exposed the biggest bottleneck in tokenised finance: trust. Even if a company claims it has $100M in assets and wants $10M in credit, how do you verify that collateral is real, held in custody, and cannot be double-sold while a token is circulating? Ivo says even if the terms look good, most serious capital won’t move if trust is missing. What crypto gets wrong about TradFi and Vice Versa When asked what crypto misunderstands about traditional finance, Ivo explains that the real critique is cultural: crypto often chases lottery-ticket outcomes instead of sustainable compounding. “Compounding is the true power of finance,” he says. You don’t need 1000x. Even consistent returns build real wealth over time. Hype cycles come and go, and he points to NFTs as an example of how narratives can evaporate when there’s no durable utility. Then he flips the question. Traditional finance, he says, sees crypto as risky largely because the industry earned that reputation: scams, endless tokens, unregulated teams, shallow accountability. But what they miss is that blockchain is fundamentally technology: “It’s a general ledger… it can improve operations. It gives you global access.” Real Finance’s strategy is to meet TradFi where it is. That’s why they built an L1 tailored for institutions, with familiar mechanisms: scoring, evaluation, insurance, due diligence, and crucially, business entities as validators. Real Finance, explained simply So what is Real Finance? In Ivo’s framing, it’s an institutional-grade L1 designed so that when an asset is tokenised, the trust assumptions are visible onchain containing all information on who evaluated it, who insured it, where custody sits, and what restrictions prevent the issuer from touching or selling the underlying asset while tokens are live. He gives a clean example using a German government bond. Today, access is fragmented, and cross-border participation is near impossible. But if you tokenise and fractionalise it, anyone can invest small amounts globally and even use it as collateral. But none of that works if buyers can’t verify custody and enforceability. That’s the heart of the Real Finance thesis: RWAs aren’t broken because of tokenisation, but because trust is missing. What success looks like When asked what failure looks like, Ivo gives a clear metric: if in five years banks aren’t doing interbank deals through Real (even a small percentage), it’s not success. And if it works? He thinks people still underestimate how quickly the infrastructure can change: clearing houses, settlements, risk mitigation through smart contracts, and global liquidity movement. He also pushes back on the idea that crypto moves slowly. The example he uses is mindset shifts at institutions: if a 200-year-old bank (JP Morgan) goes from calling crypto a scam to building onchain solutions in five years, the pace is “light speed” compared to traditional systems.
