@daniellloyd1 @jorgepontedeira Valverde was the most complete rider and, when he rode one, proved he could also do cobbles - but he was a top 3 GC rider not a dominant champion

@jorgepontedeira It's a good point, although those five riders combined have started fewer cobbled monuments than Pogacar has won. I think what I'm trying to say is that, if you want to be seen as one of the all time greats in the future, you'd better be winning the biggest one day races too.

Best result in a monument: Alberto Contador: 9th Nairo Quintana: 9th Chris Froome: 36th It's easy to forget that there was a generation or two where classics and Grand Tours were almost two entirely different disciplines. Whether you enjoy watching Tadej Pogačar dominate the one day classics or not, he has set a very good precedent for future pros - winners of Grand Tours can and probably should race monuments (even cobbled ones). That's the thought process that future greats will have as they're growing up, and that's got to be a good thing.

@InsideOut2912 The truth is nobody knows, so why pretend we do? Let’s enjoy his talent and if he improves let’s hope he has a suitable adversary.

Seixas is without doubt the best 19-year-old rider we’ve ever seen, but progression isn’t always linear. I think he’s already closer to his ceiling than eg Pogačar was at 19. That said, I think he will dominate cycling, but in my opinion he won’t reach Pogačar’s level 🤔

The grey bibs from hell are official! 😱😫 Ineos Grenadiers reveals one of the ugliest kits in cycling history: grey bibs and a white-orange jersey. It's actually so bad it could become legendary LOL.

@PuncheurCycling I can only think of Indurain historically where you’d need to adjust the relative lack of aerodynamics to his performances. Don’t know if his watts are out in the open or not weight around high 70s to low 80s and hanging on to sub 60 riders who we know doped

In terms of FTP expressed as w/kg, of course both current and historical titles go to Tadej Pogacar, at about 7.1 (he did an estimated 6.98 on PdB for 40 minutes up to slight altitude at the end of a 200km/5000m vertical stage in 80F temperature).

The Hayden Pucker power data has me thinking, who on Earth has the highest FTP (1hr power) in absolute watts, and who had the highest in history? My best guess is that Filippo Ganna has both distinctions, at 515-520w. at 87kg, this is still just 6w/kg FTP

Top 5 Disappointments of the 2025 Season 1️⃣ Carlos Rodríguez Carlos Rodríguez is an incredibly talented rider, and after his 5th place at the 2023 Tour de France, expectations were sky-high. Many believed that, if not for his crash, he might even have reached the podium. In 2024 he made top 10 in both Tour amd Vuelta, performing a consistent season with a victory in Romandie and 4th in Dauphiné. But in 2025, he never quite found his rhythm. He crashed in the Tour and was forced to abandon, and his other results 6th in Romandie and 6th in Valenciana were far below expectations for a rider meant to be INEOS’s big GC leader. At 24, Rodríguez remains one of Spain’s brightest hopes, but he needs to turn potential into consistent results. For me, he’s the biggest disappointment of the year. 2️⃣ Ben O’Connor O’Connor moved from AG2R to Jayco to fill the void left by Simon Yates and become the team’s new Grand Tour leader. But his season was largely underwhelming. He managed 7th overall at the Tour de Suisse and even won a stage at the Tour de France but then slipped to 11th overall after the team misjudged tactics in the Tour final. He later abandoned the Vuelta (suffered a crash there) and failed to shine elsewhere. Considering the expectations, it was a disappointing first year in Jayco colours. 3️⃣ Maxim Van Gils A high-profile signing from Lotto–Dstny, Van Gils came in with plenty of buzz a rider expected to thrive in the Ardennes and hilly one-day races. But the reality didn’t quite match the hype. He won a stage in the Tour of Norway** and Vuelta a Andalucía but both were ProSeries-level races. His 3rd place at San Sebastián was the only notable highlight in an otherwise quiet season. Given his potential, Van Gils under-delivered, especially in the Classics where many expected him to shine. 4️⃣ Juan Ayuso Now, this one is more complex. Juan Ayuso earns his spot in this list not because his results were terrible, but because of what was expected from him and how the season unfolded beyond pure racing. Up until the Giro d’Italia Ayuso looked fantastic: he won Tirreno–Adriatico finished 2nd at Volta a Catalunya behind Roglič, and even took wins in smaller races. But from the Giro onward, things began to unravel. He won a stage but then had to abandon after being stung by a bee an incident that became one of the strangest moments of the season. After that, he spent months off the bike, then returned for a few late-season races and Vuelta where he took two stage wins plus a TTT victory a 8th at Worlds, and 6th at the European Championships. For most riders, that would be a good season. But this is Juan Ayuso the man many in Spain hail as the next great hope, the supposed heir to Contador, the rider expected to challenge the likes of Pogacar and Vingegaard one day. By those standards, 2025 fell short. He didn’t deliver in the Grand Tours, and with young talents like Isaac Del Toro and Paul Seixas emerging, Ayuso’s progress seems to have stalled. His upcoming move to Lidl–Trek might help him reset, but for now, he’s undeniably one of the season’s biggest illusions a rider surrounded by hype, yet still far from fulfilling it. 5️⃣ Antonio Tiberi After finishing 5th at the 2024 Giro d’Italia Tiberi was billed as Italy’s next Grand Tour star. But 2025 didn’t quite confirm that status. He finished 17th at the Giro losing time after a crash, and then produced a solid 2nd at the Tour of Poland behind McNulty but that was about it. His Vuelta and final part of the season were unremarkable. With Giulio Pellizzari and Lorenzo Finn rising. Tiberi’s place as Italy’s leading prospect is under threat. Still, at 24, there’s room to improve but this season was clearly below expectations. #JuanAyuso #CarlosRodriguez #BenOConnor #AntonioTiberi #MaximVanGils #Cycling #CyclingSeason2025

Tadej Pogacar confirms he'll go for more stages: "You cannot just back off if an opportunity for a stage win comes up. You never know when it will be your last day. I will say, honestly, the team pays you to win, not to give them away." #TDF2025 cyclingnews.com/news/im-paid-t…

💬 There is a grain of truth in Tim Wellens' comment: "We've already laughed together that we're going to do ⛰️ Cipressa in <9 min." (wielerrevue) The fact is that they've already broken ⛰️ Poggio record ⏱️. There aren't many details that could be improved. Cipressa could be 1.

Transport systems are not working for the people they serve, and that needs to change. By putting people at the heart of how we design, build and operate transport, we can make it work for everyone.

@eliassrf0504 I am not a fan of these stages tbh, but it's also true there are really small chances of doing them in France due to having really few if none climbs with 3-4 kms in double-digits%.

What if the Tour de France had a Vuelta-style stage with a short, intense climb at the end? Plomb du Cantal could work. The road to Refuge du Plomb just needs resurfacing. It’d be like TDF 2024 Stage 11, but with one more climb at the finish.
