Naval Ravikant on the importance of hiring high-agency people Naval defines agency as: “People who just solve problems without even being asked to solve the problem—they identify the problem, they go solve it, they don’t even necessarily have to update you every step of the way, they’re not asking silly questions, and they’re just coming up with solutions.” He believes this is important because “building a startup is an infinite set of problems that are being thrown at you.” And there comes a day where you can’t even look at every problem your company is facing—let alone solve every one of them. He cites the Vinod Khosla aphorism: "The team you build is the company you build, not the plan you make.” And your ability to solve problems is based entirely on how many problem-solvers you have at your company. As Naval puts it: “If you have somebody who takes 10% of your time and management to solve problems, you can only have 10 of those people working with you. But if somebody takes 5%, you can have 20 of those people.” When building Airchat and AngelList, he thought of each team as a Navy Seal team: “Everyone is just really good at what they do. They know their job. They do it. They don’t complain. They’re not egotistical about it. And if they have to constantly be corrected, led around by the nose, you have to clean up after them, or you question their judgement, it’s not going to work out.” Source: @AngelList (Dec 2023)

Isaiah Taylor - making nuclear reactors
Moments ago, Valar Atomics took Ward 250 critical for the first time. This fulfills President Trump’s EO 14301, which called for 3 advanced reactors to go critical by July 4th. This is our second criticality as a company, and an important step toward our goal of power by July 4.

my last company had >10,000 engineers when i joined neuralink, the robot team had 11 mechanical engineers the midjourney scanner was made by 9 people you would be surprised how much a small team can get done, as long as you have the right people recruiting is the greatest ROI
David@DavidSHolz

@tobi happy you like it! but 80 percent of the company still works on image models this was made by a team of 9 people! wonderful people and I'm happy we have enough fuancial freedom to work on multiple projects at the same time ❤️definitely gonna grow the team now that it's public

Your compromising in the now has prolonged your circumstances. I’ve made decisions in my life where I tried to have it all immediately. I attempted to ride the elevator to the top, only to find that when the doors opened, I was still on the same floor. You want the great house, the nice things, the big opportunities, and so you start compromising in the present to get them before you’re ready. It might be a job, a project, or a relationship—you try to shortcut the result, and instead, you end up prolonging your current situation. Before you know it, you’re stuck in a loop, cycling back and forth, never breaking through. They say the best dishes are cooked low and slow, not with a flash in the pan that burns everything up—or worse, a microwave job that lacks depth. There is so much to learn on the journey. Allow yourself to go through the process. Keep hammering the same spot. Stop bouncing all over the wall hoping to get lucky. Adapt when necessary—if the situation requires an audible, call “easy, easy,” make the adjustment, and then return to steady, consistent execution. That consistency will create your breakthrough. That’s how you build the life you’ve imagined. Stop compromising and delaying your arrival by getting in your own way. No letting the immaturity of immediate gratification dictate your decisions. Patience, discipline, and perseverance—not compromise—are what carry you to the next level! #MindStrength
