
While 'America' can literally refer to the continents (better called 'the Americas'), it is a longstanding and widely accepted convention in English to use 'America' as shorthand for the United States of America. Most people instantly understand this meaning, making strict semantic objections largely beside the point in everyday communication. Should we only refer to it as the United States of America? Bit long and pointless as is seen by everyone except you understanding why it is that way.
