It was a pleasure to welcome UNICEF Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, @SanjayWijesek, to Pakistan. From meeting with the Prime Minister and Polio Oversight Board partners to seeing UNICEF supported integrated services in action in Sindh, the visit highlighted what's possible through strong partnerships. My recent mission to Pakistan with the Polio Oversight Board reinforced my confidence that, with continued commitment and partnership, a #PolioFree future is within reach. Thanks to safe and effective vaccines, strong government leadership, sustained support from partners and the extraordinary dedication of frontline health workers, Pakistan has made encouraging progress in reducing wild poliovirus transmission. While significant challenges remain in the remaining high-risk areas, the upcoming low-transmission season presents a critical opportunity to interrupt the remaining chains of transmission and move closer to a #PolioFree future. Over the past three decades, Pakistan has reduced paralytic polio cases by 99.8%. Seizing this opportunity will require continued political commitment, high-quality vaccination campaigns, strengthened routine immunization and surveillance, and the trust and engagement of communities. @WHO remains committed to working alongside Pakistan and partners to support these efforts and ensure that every missed child is reached with life-saving vaccines. During my recent visit to 🇵🇰, I was deeply moved to learn about two children living with paralytic polio whose cases had been examined by our @WHOPakistan team. Unfortunately, their lives have been changed forever by a disease we have the knowledge and vaccines to prevent. Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP), the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), the World Health Organization (WHO), and UNICEF have signed a three-year extension agreement under the Benazir Nashonuma Programme (BNP 3.0). Through this renewed partnership, an additional 3.3 million pregnant and breastfeeding women and children under the age of two across Pakistan will receive essential nutrition and healthcare services. Addressing the ceremony, Chairperson BISP Senator Rubina Khalid said that the Benazir Nashonuma Programme is a powerful example of how social protection, quality nutrition, healthcare, and strong partnerships can bring lasting positive change to the lives of mothers and children. BISP carries forward the vision of Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto, who dreamed of a Pakistan where no mother or child would be deprived of a better life because of poverty. The ceremony was also attended by Ms. Anita Hirsh, WFP Representative and Country Director in Pakistan, Ms. Sharmeela Rassool, Deputy Representative of UNICEF Pakistan, and Dr. Luo Dapeng, WHO Representative in Pakistan. They commended the Government of Pakistan and BISP for the remarkable achievements of the Benazir Nashonuma Programme, describing it as a model of integrated social protection and nutrition.
