UK ambassador to Norway visited Scotstoun today to see future HMS Glasgow (in photo) and Cardiff fitting out. The stupidly long time it's taking to fit out these ships is unfortunately the result of some of those decisions, over many years, that seemed "sensible" at the time.

Reporter: Why didn't you notify Japan that you were going to attack Iran? Trump next to the Japanese PM: "Who knows better about surprise than Japan? Why didn't you tell me about Pearl Habour? You believe in surprise I think much more so than us."

I met with South Yorkshire Mayor @OliverCoppard to establish the South Yorkshire Defence Growth Deal. This £50 million investment will grow defence capability and create high-skilled jobs across the region – making defence a true engine for growth. 🇬🇧

UK to buy additional @thalesgroup Martlet missiles as counter-drone weapon demand spikes. Interesting line stating the LMM has "already proven highly capable for air defence in the Middle East"; have shots been made using deployed @RoyalNavy Wildcats? flightglobal.com/defence/uk-to-…

@dahontr3 A very good point, though I'm pulling the "before my time" card! Might even consider Peter Thorneycroft, who killed off the CVA-01 carriers and their supporting escorts.

The situation the Royal Navy now finds itself in, has been inevitable for over two decades: First, in 2004, Geoff Hoon sold three almost new Type 23 Frigates to Chile. Reducing the fleet to 13 Then, in 2008, Bob Ainsworth cancelled the seventh and eighth Type 45 (down from 12)

@cabinetofficeuk The hereditary peers' forebears received their places in the House of Lords by dint of political patronage. From now on the vast majority of peers will have received their places in the House of Lords by dint of political patronage. This is not as seismic a change as you pretend

This is the biggest reform to our Parliament in a generation. 🇬🇧 This morning, the 700-year-old system of hereditary membership in the House of Lords was abolished. Membership is now earned through public service and merit, not granted by an inheritance. ✅
