Presenting the difficult situation @Sue_Ryder to NHS England today. So sad to have 5 Hospices without Spiritual Care specialists in place. Still not sure if @CareQualityComm will take seriously what they have done. I am presuming, sadly that @hospiceuk will also say nothing.

@HealthChaplains @hospiceuk Eliminating spiritual care from palliative care not only denies the roots but also the contemporary and well established principles of evidence- based modern palliative care

totally agree. not sure how much a hospice has to go from it roots to be called out by other hospice providers who remain committed to a holistic paradigm of care. So far @hospiceuk has been sadly silent...

@HealthChaplains Quite simply: a palliative care service can not claim to be ‘Palliative Care’ if one of the globally recognised core elements (spiritual care) in holistic/total patient care is excised

nothing yet from @hospiceuk. anyone know if they actually look at Twitter?? 😅 just been reading hospiceuk.org/latest-from-ho… just 4 years ago...

Will @hospiceuk say something about the number of hospices this week deciding that specialist spiritual care is no longer part of what they provide. We would value clear commitment on this vital issue. What do hospices stand for if no specialist spiritual care offered? @bbcsml

Copied to @bbcsml as little or no media interest in this - or indeed similar decision by @Sue_Ryder to remove spiritual care provision from ALL 7 hospices. Happy to explain the inequalities this brings about. Hospice care without spiritual care- what does this even mean?

We are so very aware of the funding crisis in the hospice movement- but cutting spiritual care is like taking the soul out of holistic care. Where now do we recommend patients go to get spiritual care (especially if they are not religious?) #justnotholistic

Received confirmation today that the post I job-share as Spiritual Care Coordinator (Chaplain) for Birmingham Hospice is being made redundant. This is in spite of many members of the community writing in to petition that this core service should be maintained. @MichelePaduano @HealthChaplains

@JobbingRev @MichelePaduano We are so sorry to hear this Lynn. You have been trying so hard to enable the Hospice to understand modern spiritual care provision, and we are deeply saddened to hear of another Hospice that has decided not to prioritise the spiritual care of dying patients. #justnotholistic

CHCC (largest professional body in UK for spiritual care staff) we are deeply disappointed-@Sue_Ryder moving away from best practice #EOL care, ignoring NHS guidance and seemingly removing workforce (they recruited) because they are Christian.
WeChaplains@WeChaplains

feeling very much for the @Sue_Ryder spiritual care providers as they are made redundant. Seems like org has lost its soul. 112£ million income but not a penny on spiritual care direct to #EOL patients and families. not sure what else to say @BBCNews @hospiceuk

@JobbingRev @Hospice_Poet @BBCGlos Would agree- IF they said it was to do with saving money. @sueryder say it is cost neutral - they simply want 'wellbeing' teams not spiritual care. Of course- there is no professional body for 'wellbeing'- no safety standards- no training. deeply saddening

@Hospice_Poet @HealthChaplains @BBCGlos Couldn’t agree more, but it would appear that when a hospice is struggling financially, getting rid of the spiritual care coordinator role is seen as an appropriate way to save money 😢

.@BBCGlos local Sue Ryder decides to replace spiritual care with 'Wellbeing' team and prevents chaplains from applying to lead this, concerned they are "aligned to Christianity". Modern spiritual care teams there for everyone at difficult times.

We have not yet had comment from @hospiceuk They do not speak for individual hospices, but when a huge (112£ million) charity like #SueRyder cuts all spiritual care provision across England, might they express a commitment to the need for specialist spiritual care? @BBC

Very shocked by this. @Sue_Ryder has some excellent excellent chaplains, but it seems the ‘powers that be’ still don’t understand spiritual care. Everyone will be the poorer; patients, relatives, and staff.
WeChaplains@WeChaplains

Just heard that @Sue_Ryder is planning to make its spiritual care staff redundant (point of principle, not funding). Can't quite believe. No specialist bedside support, just volunteers and religious groups invited in. Really? in 2024? @hospiceuk @HealthChaplains @BBCNewsPR
