@jaydrogers They optimize for volume. I think you’ll find support on the low end of the budget hosting is very limited, typically business hours only and best effort response times. So only really good if you have redundancy across providers and can manage servers on your own.

Hetzner does it again... I ran quick benchmarks to compare what $9.96/mo gets you vs $24/mo. Both servers are AMD EPYC. How can Hetzner have a price so low? 🤯

@levelsio The last inflight cubesat I logged in to had a hardened Debian running on it, the main challenge was space radiation messing with the storage and memory. But you could do hosting that just fine. Cubesats rely on expensive downlinks, they should open up Starlink for space peering.

I'd absolutely love if I could rent a tiny VPS on a satellite in space Is it possible? Would also provide a special legal opportunity for free speech possibly because it's in "international waters" right?

@levelsio lol you are taking digital nomad to a whole new level. Soon all your sites will be a on their own physical server floating in orbit.

the panels app is very poorly made and all payments are verified on client side links to all wallpapers (hd/sd) are preloaded right after the app is launched, all you need are basic mitm skills to get them for free. the file with links isn’t authenticated or protected *at all*
Marques Brownlee@MKBHD

And now - I'm so pumped to be launching this app! People have asked where I get wallpapers FOREVER, so this is the answer, now and forever: PANELS! @panels_art Available on iOS or Android panels.art

For the last 10 years, I've managed servers for @levelsio (Nomad List, Remote OK + PhotoAI), Ghost and many others. I've learnt a lot, and met a bunch of helpful people, so I thought it'd be nice to have a community dedicated to server problems: ⚙️ serverhelp.co Post the problems/questions you have, and me and everyone else will try to help. I'm also working on troubleshooting guides + recommendation docs for the best server management tools. Currently $1/mo to avoid spammers and gauge interest whilst I'm bootstrapping the site :)

@helloitsolly 7x a “no” then, right? They’re just asking if you offer assurances. They can then decide if it’s worth staying or becoming a customer without these assurances.

wrote a step by step guide on how to set up a Hetzner VM for self-hosting (from $4/mo 🔥) so you can skip the serverless tax did I miss something? 🤔 I went for the most minimalistic setup while still having the basis so anyone could follow along. Also, I did this while on the bus sorry for the typos 🙈

@mitchellh I see people utilizing (container) cruises for that purpose. Internet is available when needed, but limited and pricey. Laundry, gym and sustenance is provided for and the rest is up to you 💻

This hits on a practice I’ve always recommended to people: build a list of actionable tasks, offline download the resources you need, and utilize poor internet situations as a place of extreme focus. In the early 2010s I wrote a ruby script to download all my GitHub issues, then I’d work on them offline on the airplane. I did this because airplane WiFi was really bad then and it was also pretty expensive and saving that money was meaningful to me then. But I realized quickly that it was just generally a really good practice. I’d land, push, and close a dozen or more issues. I started doing this at coffee shops and making it a point to just turn my WiFi off! I still continue to do this today. I build a list of tasks that I can complete in at most an hour. If an issue is more complex I do the planning and thinking ahead of time and break it down. Then I turn off WiFi and turn on do not disturb and get to work. I’ll turn WiFi back on between tasks. This works really well for me. I’ve shared this technique before but it’s definitely one of my best kept “open” secrets of how I get some things done so productively.
piq and 69 others@piq9117

do yall download all the docker images before heading to a coffee shop? and just hope u wont have to download more images? i tried this and i had such a hard time pulling just a couple of images. i cant imagine using unstable nixpkgs

@johnkonrad The 14k ton crane vessels have a 25 meter minimum draft. Price and pride matter. Europes SSCVs frequent the Gulf of Mexico, when Deepwater Horizon happened they had a number in the area, but negotiations made it so that less capable platforms were used to lift the containment.

What unified command is calling the “largest crane on the eastern US seaboard” is in Baltimore. It can lift 1,000 tons. But they are wrong, it’s not the largest. The Left Coast Lifter (used to construct New York’s Mario Cuomo bridge is in Staten Island. It can lift 1700 tons The VB-10000 in the Gulf of Mexico can lift 6,800 tons China has cranes that can lift over 10,000 tons The Netherlands have crane ships that can lift over 14,000 tons Why does this matter? Because the most difficult and dangerous part of this salvage is having divers cut the bridge into small 1000 ton segments the tiny “largest crane on the eastern US seaboard” can lift Smaller morsels means the divers need to make more difficult and dangerous cuts underwater. So why isn’t the unified command bringing in larger cranes from Europe? I don’t know. I’m in Baltimore and got a few answers including “Jones Act Restrictions” and the Army and Navy longer owning large floating cranes. But does the Navy need to use Jones Act ships on federal operations? I don’t comment on the Jones Act because it leads to angry comments on both sides so I won’t answer that. The most common answer I received about bringing in truly large European cranes is they will take too long to arrive. It’s true, most of these cranes move slowly BUT Europe also owns heavylift ships that can pickup and carry floating cranes so… I can’t find any great answers to these questions. For those curious, here’s what a truly large crane looks like. The next picture is a heavylift ship carrying large container cranes the Port of Baltimore bought from China in 2021

The scene in #Baltimore requires more heavy lift than is currently on location. Two assets that should be considered is the Left Coast Lifter, used in the construction of the Tappan Zee which can lift 1700 tons. Also, the VB-1000 can lift up to 6,800 tons.

Deploying your code on the worst possible cloud provider saves you from having to install and run chaos monkey. This also helps to build more resilient software in general that can easily deal with outages and long timeouts and other weird issues that you wouldn't get from AWS.
