For more than half of all cancer patients, radiotherapy treatment is essential, — yet in many countries, access remains limited. Through its #RaysOfHope initiative, the IAEA has delivered essential equipment to support the restoration of radiotherapy services at the National Cancer Institute in Wad Madani Sudan. Crop diseases don’t stop at borders — and neither does science. To help countries develop sustainable ways to protect key crops like wheat, potato and cassava, the Agency, through the Joint @FAO / IAEA Centre, has launched a new research project that uses nuclear and related techniques to detect and stop plant diseases earlier. Today, IAEA Director General @rafaelmgrossi welcomed @FAODG Qu Dongyu and the Permanent Representatives of @FAO Member Countries at the Joint FAO/IAEA Centre laboratories in Seibersdorf, Austria. “Your presence today shows that Member States recognize the rising role of science, technology and innovation, including nuclear techniques, in shaping the future of global food security. These challenges require solutions that are science-driven, field-ready and scalable,” DG Grossi said. The FAO/IAEA Laboratories help member states harness nuclear technologies to tackle pressing challenges, from increasing crop yields and protecting livestock to controlling pests, advancing soil and water management and safeguarding food safety and authenticity.
