After SpaceX broke records with its launch on the stock market, the headlines are focusing on Elon being the world's first trillionaire, but they're missing some vital points. Firstly, he's only a trillionaire on paper. His net worth is primarily due to the number of shares he holds in his companies. Secondly, it's not about the money; it's about delivering his vision to improve people's lives and make humanity multiplanetary. Sure, if he cashed out all his shares, he'd have more money than any other person who's ever lived, but that would be selling out his dreams. He'd have to watch other people control the destiny of the companies he's spent his life building, and that's something that's never going to happen. The reason he wants to hold so many shares in his businesses isn't for wealth, it's for control; the ability to steer the companies to produce the products that improve the world. His motivation is the opposite of selfish; in fact, in the past, he's referred to his companies as philanthropy. Tesla's self-driving is to help reduce accidents, injuries, and fatalities. To help people have mobility who otherwise wouldn't be able to drive due to age, lack of confidence, or health reasons. Neuralink is about restoring abilities to people who've been deprived of them. Noland Arbaugh, the first human recipient of the Neuralink implant, regained significant digital autonomy and independence after being paralyzed from the neck down. Buying X was about restoring free speech and helping to save democracy. Founding xAI was about protecting humanity from the dangers of AI by making it maximally truth-seeking. SpaceX is focused on reaching for the stars, colonizing Mars, and ensuring that humanity isn't wiped out when a cataclysm eventually strikes Earth. The list goes on: the Boring Company, Tesla's Optimus humanoid robots, Megapacks, and Powerwalls transforming the way electricity is generated and stored. Every one of Elon's businesses is about helping humanity, advancing what it means to be human, and benefiting others as much as possible. Elon's approach is best summed up in his answer to Joe Rogan about how he overcomes all the immense challenges he's faced, and keeps facing to make his dreams a reality: "It may sound corny, but love is the answer." So, while the headlines will scream about how it's unfair he's a trillionaire, it doesn't matter. For Elon, it's always been about his love for humanity, not money.
