- you're alos forgetting 3 F-15s were shot down over Kuwait 4 weeks ago (that was *not* a 'success') 🙄

@InBrokenCountry @gbrew24 They got first fighter jet shot down in 20 odd years. Then multiple other aircraft/helis, with unknown number of casualties. This could be only "very definition of success" (nothing like this ever done before, beautiful etc) in Trump's sick head.

This op was great, but the president “giving the order to rescue him” probably came after the op was well underway.
But he always has to get credit for “giving the order”

Some people were implying that the rescue of the WSO could act as an “off ramp” for Trump in Iran.
If anything, I personally believe that the successful operation and ability to set up a FARP inside Iran may embolden the Trump admin in regards to future ground operations.

Details about the rescue op for the U.S. Weapon Systems Officer, via a U.S. military official: "The mountain top area on the left is where the WSO was hiding (he ejected 5ish miles northwest of there). The right area is the makeshift landing strip where they landed 2 C-130s and had 4 MH-6 Little Birds. "One Little Bird flew to that mountain top area and rescued the WSO and brought him back to the landing strip. And of course the two C-130s' nose gears got stuck in the dirt. So after a few hours they had to bring in three AFSOC Dash-8s to fly out the rescued WSO and the 100 or so personnel involved in the op." 1/2

@OAlexanderDK which unfortunately would be the wrong 'lesson' to draw from this opm which had a very discrete mission. that is *completely different* than a protracted ground invasion involving 1000s of troops.

- also, this was a comparatively short time-frame op vs pulling 440kgs of HEU out of Isfahan.
- but yeah.....he'll likely draw the wrong lesson from this successful extraction op.

Tend to agree. A large force managed to operate within 50 miles of Isfahan and left after fulfilling its mission, with no personnel losses as far as we know.

"The op basically cost $300 million because they had to abandon the two AFSOC C-130s and the four MH-6 Little Birds. Then the U.S. Air Force had to use multiple bombs to blow up all the aircraft they abandoned at that airstrip. And the Iranians shot down 2 MQ-9s Reaper drones.

One would think the US had there eye on this potential landing site for other contingencies related to the nuclear program prior to this happening.

Location of the USAF forward base set up deep within Iran for the F-15 crew rescue mission. The base was set up just outside of Isfahan, a critical Iranian strategic hub with missile and army bases, nuclear facilities, and the airbase home to Iran’s F-14 fleet.

On the one hand, the costs from this episode (four, as many as seven aircraft) may suggest the risks to such operations are simply too great to contemplate.
On the other hand, the admin may perceive the successful retrieval following operations inside Iranian territory as proof that such operations are feasible.

I see a lot of people posting that the second crew member has been rescued, and while we all want this to be true, I keep refreshing news sites, and I have yet to see a reputable news source reporting this. The rumor seems to be people quote tweeting from each other. Be careful.
