That Bishop Brennan (the outgoing bishop of Wheeling-Charleston) was close to Bishop Evilio Menjivar-Ayala is about the only thing you need to know about this appointment.

@JJ_Poff I’m concerned that it is promoting a man from Washington to WVa again. The last time was incredibly traumatic for the people of God there, who are a struggling minority. They are not a sinecure…

If you earnestly think that the pope appointed a former illegal immigrant from El Salvador to lead the diocese of Wheeling/Charleston because it’ll own Trump supporting Catholics in WV, just admit you have no idea how the process of picking and assigning bishops works.

@Arbitrary_user Tell me you haven’t talked to a priest or seminarian under the age of 40 without telling me.

@JJ_Poff I am Catholic, and I don't really sense this at my parish. The survey you site above can be explained by priests having the same beliefs over the years, and society around them becoming steadily more progressive (which it has). So only in comparison are they more conservative.

This has been covered repeatedly in recent years but I don’t think people quite comprehend the degree to which the Catholic Church is shifting away from progressive politics. It’s not just the priests, it’s the families in the pews too.
Ryan Burge 📊@ryanburge

Among Catholic priests who were ordained in the late 1960s: 68% describe their theology as progressive. 16% said it was conservative. Among priests ordained in the last few years: 2% describe their theology as progressive. 84% said it was conservative.

@TXHogPilot @BradWilcoxIFS Give it time. Right now most bishops come from the cohort of priests ordained in the late 70s to early 90s. In 15 years that won’t be the case.

Pius IX, Leo XIII, Pius X, Pius XI published thousands of words against this sentiment. But it isn’t ancient history — even Vatican II condemns it: “At all times and in all places, the Church should have true freedom to preach the faith, to teach her social doctrine... and to pass moral judgment even in matters related to politics, whenever the fundamental rights of man or the salvation of souls requires it.” (Gaudium et Spes, 76)
Acyn@Acyn

Vance: I certainly think that in some cases it would be best for the Vatican to stick to matters of morality, to stick to matters of what going on in the Catholic Church and let the President to dictating American public policy

There is no “feud” between the Pope and Trump. It takes two to have feud, and this is one-sided. The Pope has issued some public criticism of the war in Iran, with which you may or may not agree. (My own reservations about those statements are on record.) Trump responded with a petty and petulant personal attack. For him, it seems, everything is always personal. Now when the Pope says, “I am not a politician,” I find myself wondering: Is Trump? Does the President have the sense to realize that Catholics are a key ‘swing’ constituency, and all faithful Catholics, MAGA or not, are appalled by this boorish outburst?

The tirade against Pope Leo was bad (and politically stupid), but this is a thousand times worse. Truly, a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words.

God knows, and so do most Catholics, that there are plenty of things to criticize in the Vatican: being in favor of peace and against stupid wars is not one of them.
