Tom Steyer has done some good things for California. But his latest idea is going to make California a lot more expensive. @TomSteyer says he wants to hold a special election to raise your taxes and weaken Prop 13. Let’s talk about what that really means. First, the special election itself will cost us at least $282 million. That’s money that could be spent on schools, safety, and housing. Second, raising taxes on businesses, especially small businesses, will make just about everything in California even more expensive. In the last six years the California state budget has grown from $200 billion to nearly $350 billion. Did you feel like government got $150 billion better? I don’t. We need more money to protect Californians from Trump cuts. But let’s start by cutting waste and making government more efficient. @YIMBYLAND It’s an issue of allocation of public goods. It’s easier to restrict access than to build more access, especially in american cities built for the automobile

People will argue that NIMBYism is really just an issue of aesthetics – “if you build something beautiful, nobody will protest”.
This is a perfect example of how that line of thinking is just flat out wrong. NIMBY wants absolutely nothing built, everywhere, at any cost.

@SinaiLawFirm @Leeo2680 Also this already exists on small scale, for example in Carthay Square there are some historic duplex and quad plexes.
However, most of the city zoned this out of existence some time ago. Which is why 72% of land is SFR zoned in LA city.

@SinaiLawFirm @Leeo2680 I think this is the point. We can still have nice suburban neighborhoods with multimillion $ homes… but need to densify commercial centers tied to transit. In the LA context that means changing zoning in nice SFR neighborhoods, e.g. Westwood, Culver City, and Mid-Wilshire

@SinaiLawFirm Your critic on the frivolous spending is fair, but raising the professor’s salary to 200 k would allow him to rent an apartment. Which altho isn’t the american dream, it would make him a housed individual.
How do you think we can make owning a home or rent more affordable?
