@memoryware_red @rintubein Toby worked with 8-4 for Undertale's Japanese translation, since he did not speak Japanese at the time (but still wanted a Japanese version since he's a weeb). 8-4 are the best localizers in the biz, and both they and Toby had a fantastic experience translating Undertale.

oh my god this is the exact point, he doesn’t care because he idolizes japan only. if his perfectionist ass gave a damn he would’ve written a 271 page long guideline on how to translate his game, like so many series do, because that’s how official translation WORKS

There's a whole 271 page long book about how Undertale was translated into japanese and how meticulous that process was and what sacrifices were made in said process And you really expect that perfectionist guy to want to translate the game into the language he doesn't know

@SsUnnerved @K_Bernkastel @SaoriHimemiya You're right that Spanish can be hard to learn. My disappointment with Toby lies with the fact that he didn't actually know Japanese when UT was translated, so the language barrier is clearly not a big hurdle for him to overcome.

@kelele77 @SaoriHimemiya From the book, they were actually surprised that Toby didn't know much Japanese. What was really valuable was his enthusiasm and deep involvement with the process, but it wasn't necessarily about him being able to translate, it was the fact that he was in the room.

@Kaelicles @SaoriHimemiya Is there a source for that? I mean there's a whole book that talks about this creative process and how it took months so the translation was clearly a learning process for him, and the whole thing took a lot of time because of it

@W_Drazmon @Friskiedreemurr It's clearly a motivation problem. He was motivated enough to have a Japanese version of his JRPG that he was fine working with a translator while he didn't know the language. The same isn't true for Spanish or any other language. He should have just said that.

@W_Drazmon @Friskiedreemurr If he wants to do the translations his own way, that's fine, but it's been 10 years since Undertale came out, and the Japanese version arrived within a year of the game coming out, and was hyped up by Toby even before the game released

This might be a stretch but Toby refusing to translate to a language unless he can be inside the translators asshole follows the pattern that he values his Themes and Such more than his fans Same with not letting Togore win on the 10 yr stream (donating 100k) or no lightner merch

@W_Drazmon @Friskiedreemurr If he only reached this level by the time Deltarune came around, then he certainly wouldn't be able to check anything about Undertale's translation. Regardless, he repeatedly told the translator for UT that his input is only a suggestion, so he's clearly not that controlling.

@W_Drazmon @Friskiedreemurr He noted that after studying Japanese, he was able to contribute more to the translation of Deltarune, and one of these new contributions was pronouns for the characters (stuff like 'ore' vs 'boku' and the like). These are incredibly basic things in Japanese.

@Friskiedreemurr He's already demonstrated that he's fine working with a translator when he doesn't know the language the game is being translated into, so this is all just a lack of motivation from him. If he just said he's busy with Deltarune, it would've gone better
