An RE teacher should have been aware that many Muslims consider any hand‑drawn depiction of the Prophet Mohammed to be religiously inappropriate, especially if it appears satirical. While many members of the community might have responded more calmly, the widespread media coverage contributed to the situation escalating and drawing in individuals who reacted far more strongly. Although he was cleared of wrongdoing, I believe it would have been reasonable for the school to issue a formal reminder about sensitivity in religious education. He definitely didn't deserve to be threatened and forced into hiding. People from every background include both those who act responsibly and those who do not, and many Muslims did not support the hostile response. It’s a shame that more voices weren’t heard at the time, but it’s understandable that individuals may stay silent when they fear becoming targets themselves.

Five years ago, hundreds of Islamists protested at the gates of Batley Grammar School all because a teacher showed a cartoon of the Prophet Muhammad during a Religious Education lesson. Within days, he was forced into hiding. Threatened with death. His family targeted and children forced to miss school. Five years on. He is STILL in hiding. Still living in fear. In Britain. And what’s changed? Instead of defending free speech, Labour are now debating new definitions of “anti-Muslim hostility” and appointing a tsar to police it. This amounts to blasphemy law by the back door and it will have a significant and chilling effect on how people live. Labour councils in the north of England have issued advice to teachers warning that children’s drawings may be deemed “idolatrous” under sharia law. That music and dance lessons might breach religious expectations. Teachers are effectively being told to be careful. Children risk being labelled blasphemous for drawing a nativity scene. 
 No religion should be above the law. No belief should be beyond criticism. The Batley teacher was cleared of any wrongdoing and an independent report said he was badly let down. But it didn’t matter. His life was already torn apart. His children forced out of school. His family still in hiding. So ask yourself, if this happened again today, would anything be different? Or would we fail him all over again? We must stand up for our teachers.
We must defend children. 
We must say no to extremism and no to blasphemy laws in Britain. We MUST fight for free speech.

I am 57, have worked full time since I was 16. Paid full NI all these years. Now I need spinal surgery, without it I will lose my mobility. It has taken 10 years to get the diagnosis. It could be another 2 years before I get the surgery. I could have the surgery next month if I went private but I can’t afford it. People breaking into the country are being fast tracked by the NHS. I feel angry and let down and honestly think what was the point of working and playing by the rules?

However cruel and callous this attack, why would the government replace the ambulances? Private companies should have insurance, and the charity has also fundraised hundreds of thousands already to replace them. NHS ambulances are the domain of the government, not private companies or charities. Will it come from a separate pot of money or will it be taken away from London ambulance service? The arson was horrific but I’m genuinely confused by this.
