Ignoring the fact that fuel imports aren't guaranteed beyond May, we don't produce the right type of crude for making fuel and would need to import crude to mix with it. Reopening those refineries would also take years. There's an argument to be made long term for bringing back some refineries, but its not a quick solution and we'd still have to import most of the oil anyway.

Australia produces up to 398,000 barrels of crude oil per day. If we stopped exporting our crude oil, had the 6 major refineries closed since 2012 re-opened, and combined that with the imports still being received - we wouldn't run out of fuel. Why won't the government do this?
