I recently came across this paper👇 Do you think the anti-inflammatory effects of sialylation observed in both models suggest a shared protective mechanism across viral infections, potentially indicating a broader role in immune regulation?

@soundgmh @ImmunityCP @StanfordMed @HHMINEWS @niaidcivics Afucosylated and asialylated Fc glycoforms predict more severe COVID-19 and the reduced sialylation in severe COVID-19 likely has a functional role (as well as the increase in afucosylation). Likely a broad role in respiratory infections but this needs to be studied.

@GordanLauc The hypothesis is strong, that “glycans are essential for nearly all aspects of immunity”, that’s why we do the work that we do. But there is so much to discover here and we are only at the tip of the iceberg.

Sialylated IgG Fc domains induce a transcription factor called REST, which blocks transcription of NF-κB. In the lungs of mice, this activity protected against influenza virus-induced inflammation and preserved lung function during infection.
