Yesterday, @Mwarpkenya , under the Scaling Care Innovation Program funded by the @AKUGlobal , held a transformative Skill Development Session at Matondoni Hall. This session aimed to #economically empower #women, #girls, and a few #men who depend on #traditional basket-making for their livelihoods. Many of these artisans have been selling their baskets at very low prices in #LamuTown — yet similar baskets fetch higher prices in places like #Malindi after undergoing simple value addition. On the #financial side, Madam Umulkher, a dedicated MWARP staff member, facilitated an engaging session on financial literacy. Participants learned how to: Track business performance Keep proper financial records Save consistently Access government support and funds This initiative is a crucial step toward #transforming local skills into sustainable #businesses. 📍 MWARP at the Forefront of Tackling GBV and Femicide in Lamu County @Mwarpkenya actively participated in a Public Participation Forum on Gender-Based Violence (GBV), including Femicide, in Lamu County. The forum brought together government officials, civil society, community leaders, and survivors to #develop actionable solutions for ending #GBV in our #communities. 🔎 Key Recommendations Made: 1️⃣ Amend national laws to define femicide and introduce mandatory minimum sentencing. 2️⃣ Establish and equip gender desks in all police stations, with trained officers. 3️⃣ Operationalize shelters and trauma centers in Lamu East, Lamu West, and border areas like Kiunga and Basuba. 4️⃣ Deploy psychologists and social workers in hospitals and courts. 5️⃣ Promote community-led GBV reporting and referral systems. 6️⃣ Introduce mandatory school curricula on gender equality and GBV prevention. 7️⃣ Expand economic empowerment programs for women and youth. 8️⃣ Integrate GBV indicators into county performance metrics. 9️⃣ Launch quarterly media monitoring reports on GBV and femicide coverage. 🔟 Implement a Gender-Based Violence Information Management System (GBVIMS) for Lamu County. ... and many more impactful steps. 📣 Our Call to Action: We urge the National Technical Working Group to: ✅ Prioritize legislative reforms and adequate funding. ✅ Establish county-level coordination platforms for GBV response. ✅ Ensure national policies reflect the unique needs of underserved regions like Lamu. 🛑 Ending GBV and femicide is possible. We explored ways to streamline the recruitment process, enhance skill development, and ensure fair labour practices to safeguard the rights and welfare of Kenyan workers abroad. This engagement reflects our commitment to strengthening bilateral ties and creating more avenues for Kenyans to access meaningful employment globally. Today, Thursday 16th May, the County Assembly lost one of its longest serving Member, MCA Zahara Shee Mohamed, after an illness. The she was Chair of the Women Caucus. She will be laid to rest tomorrow, Friday 17th May, at 4pm. @socattkenya @TheODMparty @LamuCountyKe
