@realEstateTrent They probably heard what you said about how dry cleaners tank the value of strip malls and decided to even the odds

A dry cleaner ruined one of my shirts recently, and I decided not to do anything about it. Why? They would have pushed back and insisted they didn’t do it. I would have explained why they were wrong, and they would have denied it again. I would have told them I’d never come back unless they reimbursed me, and the back and forth would have continued. Frankly, dealing with that kind of conflict over a shirt that costs a couple hundred dollars isn’t worth my time or energy at this point in life. Yes, people should be held accountable, and there should be consequences for actions, and this stuff should be viewed on a case-by-case. But in this case, it was a no brainer. All downside. I’m just not going to go back. Sometimes you have to weigh the upside, pick your battles, and choose being smart over being right.

@JordanKutzer > For the first time No it happens this way every time. People made fun of the internet, smart phones, even AI currently. The list goes on and on. New technologies get introduced and the mainstream says "this bullshit will never catch on" A few years later everyone forgets.

The expectation set for VR is dead. The reality of VR is very much alive. VR’s main utility to mainstream tech is that it’s easy to dunk on. But VR's biggest users are kids and teens. And for the first time in modern tech, we’re pretending teens aren’t where the trend starts? If you think VR is dead, play a top 10 free-to-play VR game, join its Discord, and watch a @jmancurly video. VR isn't a dead category. You’re looking in the wrong places.

@justalexoki People get so married to this particular conspiracy theory it's trying to talk a flat earther down. There is no convincing them. x.com/i/status/20264…

@saraaa7447 @ytrav_alt So let's test this empirically. Go into the kitchen with the pixel and talk about a random subject. Then go check your YouTube recommendations. Repeat this 10 times. How many times do you think it will show you what you were talking about? That way you can test confirmation bias

prediction: someone is going to get a coding AI like codex to automate turning existing steam video games into harnesses, come up with architecture to parallelize the games themselves in a manner that is conducive for RL training, and train an RL demigod model

@chatgpt21 No matter how good the xAI team is they are throttled by the number of new data centers that can be built (which is becoming increasingly illegal) Google already has the data centers. Elon is pivoting to space based as fast as possible rather than fight degrowthers planetside.

Basically we need pop stars to make songs about nuclear energy
LiveFromVR@LiveFromVR

@Authw8 The "if everyone would just..." class of problem seems simple but it's really the core challenge of coordination problems. The solution is art and culture. What seems like a catchy song, fun movie, or good book winds up changing minds enough that people let the problem be solved

thought experiment. suppose a society faces 100 unsolved problems that all have an easy fix. 98 of the problems are fixed immediately. 2 remain unfixed due to some dumb cultural aversion to the easy fix. then another 100 problems show up and the same thing happens. now we have 4 unfixed problems left hanging because of dumb cultural hangups. over time you just keep accumulating problems that seem unsolvable despite being very solvable if everyone would just X, for some X. but everyone won't just X.
vivian@vivian39_

nuclear energy is sitting right there. just sitting there. producing massive amounts of clean reliable power with a safety record better than literally every other energy source per kwh. and we're out here arguing about whether to put a solar panel on a parking garage. okay

@justalexoki Extend the amount of time between wanting and buying. Research it for 5 years. Think about how great it will be once you have it. Maybe don't even buy it in the end.

@ParadiseDecay This just kind of goes with the territory of doing anything gaming related. The video game community is probably in the top 5 biggest whiners of any fandom. No matter what you do people will be very angry, all the time. You gotta accept that as table stakes.

The thing you have to realize is that it doesn't just happen to clueless grandmas. If someone has decided to devote 100% of their attention to tricking you, they will get you in the end. In practice, most move on to easier marks.

I've been on the receiving end of a series of high effort attempted phishing scams for X. I don't really understand the motive, but they had a lot of personal information about me. Pretty soon this is going to be automated at massive scale.

As a kid, my dad would ALWAYS show up late to the theater with us, so we basically always missed the first 10-15 minutes of every movie. When it ended, we'd stay in our seats till it started again, so we could see the first few minutes and understand what we'd seen. As a small kid I thought this was just how movies were shown. Naturally, I view streaming and DVDs as freedom beyond comprehension.

@SandyofCthulhu They absolutely could, but they would have to flip the dreaded switch. Flipping this switch is frowned upon in the US, but in Europe it's highly illegal.

If the EU got its act together it would absolutely become a third superpower. I think it would have almost zero influence on US/China issues, since I can't see how it could project power into the Pacific theater. And no one would believe the EU if it said it was interested in the fates of Taiwan or the South China Sea. It could keep the remnants of Russia under check though. But that first "if" is a mighty big one.
CraiginEngland@ghost_wales

Apparently there’s an emerging argument the EU is emerging as a superpower capable of balancing the rivalry between the United States and China as a “third superpower” There’s some right dreamers in the EU 😂 Seriously delusional.
