I follow a nordic guy on IG that does this, restores these abandoned houses, he has a course on it in fact Japan is (formally) quite open to foreigners that want to live there. But the challenge is living in Japan is one continuous shit test that you are not Japanese, cannot speak good Japanese, will never be Japanese, and regardless of how many decades you put into the country, you will be a Gaijin for all time, and be subtly reminded of this every single day That said, Japanese also respect the people who attempt this and have inward facing admiration for it So yeah, cheap houses


Other thing about Japan to Americans with the Japan blindspot It's not a modern "futuristic" country, everything is old and stuck in 1990 China, Korea and then parts of Taiwan, Vietnam and Thailand are more modern and futuristic in most ways
