@jadethebpdcoach Most therapists are MSW, and most MSW programs don’t train students how to deal with transference.

There seems to be a belief among many BPD patients in therapy that if they reveal any romantic feelings towards their therapist, their therapist will have to stop working with them. What can be done to start educating patients about what is “allowed” in therapy?

Is this written by AI? Because if it’s written by a real patient describing psychotherapy, something feels “off.” If you’re a therapist or a patient in therapy, what seems off to you?

@RealAdamHunt Sometimes I get confused here. Evidence based interventions to increase “happiness” teach pts to override evolved affective signals when they misfire (smoke detector). ERP, DBT, and ACT involve acting against the grain of emotions shaped for fitness, not well being (today).

Evolution doesn’t optimise specifically for happiness. It optimises for fitness-relevant outcomes. However, well-being is often a by-product of systems achieving their evolutionary function - our evolved imperatives are not disconnected from what Aristotle referred to as Eudaimonia; "human flourishing."

What is remarkable in the “would you have sex with a stranger” studies (in which ~75 percent of men agreed to have sex with a complete stranger and no women agreed) is that more men didn’t respond exactly like this video.

The act of writing reveals to you, in quite a brutal way, just how many of your thoughts are merely feelings

@treatmyocd what gives truth and importance to the obsession is the bodily experience of the anxiety response. Without it, an obsession is just a bubble. Watch it pop! It’s all in your body!

It was pointed out to me by my partner that I’m so averse to self deception that when I identify something as a threat to my self esteem I end up sitting in the feeling and am heavily biased towards accepting it as truth. I think I’ve slightly destroyed myself in the process of doing this. How do people feel positive things about themselves without feeling disgusting? Looking for advice on how to start liking yourself for beginners.

@yesandblog Same experience. But you’re not trained in anything anyway out of school, you learn in your 2 years of supervision afterwards. Also there is something incredibly didactical in hearing the “wrong way”. It’ll make you stand out. If you can please go back and finish. We need you!

There are many reasons I quit a clinical Masters in Social Work, but one clear warning bell… Student: “basic Q about transference” Professor response: “Transference is bad. Countertransference is unacceptable. There need to be clear boundaries. If a client is having transference, you need to terminate. Boundaries must be kept”. This professor was a LCSW and PhD and had an active private practice. I immediately requested to transfer to another professor teaching the same course - an acclaimed “expert” in CBT who aggressively pushed back against any student who questioned it as the “evidence- based gold standard” or expressed interest in other theories/modalities. Not all therapists are created equal. The US has a deep mental health crisis which our current culture thinks can be solved with bandaids and TUMS. It’s unsustainable, and will likely have to crash and burn before things get better. Sometimes I wish I’d just bitten my tongue, finished the program, and continued with psychoanalytic training after. I didn’t have the constitution for it. I’d lost respect for the program as a whole (for various reasons - macro and micro). This is a bit rambling - to sum up: 1. Many therapists are poorly trained 2. Psychoanalytic theory and practice is the real deal 3. It’s worth seeking out one of you truly want to grow and change *Other therapies can be helpful supplementally. *DBT and CBT can help stop the bleeding in crisis. *Somatic/Gestalt/Embodied offer a different sprinkle of magic and experience that can be brought to analysis (my 2nd favorite therapist specialized in Gestalt). *ACT metaphors and certain practices/perspectives can bring relief. But psychoanalysis will break your heart so you can truly see humanity - and integrate it back into your fuller, non/less fragmented self.

Had my first ever therapy (psychoanalytic) session where I felt safe to express frustration/confusion (transference?) directly with my therapist. It was the most healing and impactful session yet. This was possible due to both the therapeutic relationship and my developing

@RealAdamHunt I thought depression is a functional response to adversity to increase fitness, not necessarily a trait. Could it be that certain personality traits (heritable) select themselves into environments that create adversity? (e.g agreeableness). Thanks

If diseases that affect us early are typically weeded out by evolution, why do mental illnesses remain widespread? Perhaps traits associated with disorders like anxiety or depression had survival benefits for our ancestors.
