🇮🇷🇮🇱 What just changed tonight? This is the first time Iran has struck Israel in response to an Israeli strike on a 3rd country. Not Iran itself, but Lebanon. The significance is structural. Iran's deterrence used to mean: strike Iran and Iran strikes back. Tonight it expanded to: strike Lebanon and Iran strikes back. That's a fundamentally different equation. One that extends Iranian hard power as a check on Israeli military action across the entire region, not just over Iranian territory. For decades Israel has operated with near-impunity because no regional power had both the capability and willingness to impose real costs on its military actions abroad. If that equation has genuinely shifted, every conflict in the region, including Palestine, has a new variable in it that wasn't there yesterday. Not the final stretch, not almost done, but a specific fraction with time still on the clock. The message to Israel is embedded in the sports metaphor: you don't blow a lead in the fourth quarter. The equation game: Contrary to President Trump's remarks this evening, Israel's strike in Beirut this morning was carried out with explicit White House approval and in line with the understandings reached last week: if Hezbollah resumes attacks on Israeli territory with rockets or drones, Israel would respond with a strike in Beirut. The moment barrages were launched at Israel, it was clear Jerusalem would uphold its side of the equation. Israel's strike on Beirut was highly symbolic, targeting a headquarters that was largely empty. Now comes an equation no less important. After Iran launched a significant number of missiles at Israel, Jerusalem cannot afford not to respond — even if such a move is not in line with President Trump's wishes. Trump remains focused on securing a deal almost at any cost and appears eager to close this episode by telling Iran: "You've fired your missiles, that's enough. Get back to the table and make a deal." Israel simply cannot agree not to respond.

Trump says Israel shouldn’t attack because we are close to a deal. Funny how that doesn’t stop Hezbollah or Iran from attacking. This looks weak and would be terrible for America’s deterrent worldwide. Worthy of Biden or Obama, really. My guess would be Israel goes ahead anyway.

I’ve always had respect for Massie. He was always -in my opinion - wrong about his approach but he was standing on heartfelt principles and had intellectual backing. He’s a nice guy. But comments like this make me question his authenticity. The USS Liberty incident is a tragic one, but it’s an incident with a clear conclusion if one uses any objective analysis of the facts. I thought Massie was capable of objective analysis. Perhaps he still is. Perhaps we are simply witnessing another example of the irresistible incentive to jump on the bandwagon of grifters that guarantee you a specific kind of social media audience and attention that ultimately results in profits.
