After the defeat of Viktor Orbán and Fidesz, an investigation by The Guardian sheds light on a frantic endgame around Hungary’s former ruling circle. Private jets reportedly taking off from Vienna, assets being shifted towards the Gulf, the US and beyond, and insiders scrambling for foreign visas: the picture is one of a network racing against time. At the same time, allegations of document destruction raise concerns about what might be lost before scrutiny begins.
This is not just a national issue. When public contracts, EU funds and political power intertwine, accountability becomes a European responsibility. A democratic transition must ensure full transparency, protect evidence, and guarantee that no wealth built on public resources escapes legitimate oversight. The deeper the search for truth, the greater the justice for the Hungarian people — and the clearer the lesson for would-be autocrats elsewhere.
