Remember that rationality is easily teachable whereas irrationality is easily manipulated. Would you rather learn and grow into your own self-sufficient individual? Or be used by others and discarded like worthless pawn? Pause, take a breath, and be 10% more rational each day.

@evileboxyboo @RyozuK It has no place in gaming, period. No other entertainment media forces us to specific hardware, although I'm sure Sony has considered it... Imagine having to buy a Sony TV to watch the Venom movies (produced by Sony Pictures). Yet somehow it's just accepted with video games?

@Mortiel @RyozuK And exclusivity is extremely anticonsumer and has no place in the free PC space.

Any transparency disclosure is merely a tool for consumers to optionally choose when considering a purchase. More info is always better to me. Timmy here doesn't understand that it's not for him to decide what info consumers find valuable when buying, hence why EGS is failing.
Tim Sweeney@TimSweeneyEpic

@TheOtherFrost Food lists ingredients because they directly affect the buyer; people have allergies and dietary sensitivities. AI development tools aren’t comparable; AI opposition is a political movement and Steam AI disclosures are political signals like ESG disclosures.

@PCMR_Elitist I have an HTPC (Corsair i200) set up with Win10 LTSC in a multi-app kiosk config that auto-launches Steam in Big Picture that I'll probably test with SteamOS.

@evileboxyboo @RyozuK It's a calculus... 88% of the revenue from a tenth the sales really isn't sustainable, which is why Epic pays developers for exclusivity; It's to compensate them for the sales they would have gotten on Steam.

@RyozuK @Mortiel That is patently false. Epic'a customers are dumb developers* tricked by cheap "le lower taxes" populism. The good devs understand that the 30% steam cut is more than fair

@evileboxyboo The store still exists and is currently losing money, so it is failing. That's not saying it wasn't a failure in the past, but that it's in a continual state of failure. Tim even argued with me calling it a loss leader when it first launched, pretending it wasn't losing money.

@Mortiel As someone so succinctly put: Steam's customers are the game players. Epic's customers are the game developers.

If enough customers wanted to know the astrological signs of the 7th credited developer on the project to decide if they want the game, then it's smart to disclose that... Unless you know that info will lead to less sales, which is exactly the case with an AI disclosure and UE6.

@Smeggman32 As someone that uses AI in scripting and programming, I can say that you won't find too many engineers like me that hate it given how much it speeds up work, even if just using AI code completion (which is just auto-complete of your own code).

I disagree. Epic would be objectively worse than Microsoft if they had the market share of Valve. They already are publicly trying to coerce other distributors into price fixing their revenue share at artificially low rates to prevent competitors from entering the market.
The Captain@TheCaptainVT

I refused to support the EGS for years, and openly said as much on my streams and in the discord, but I think I need to say something here as well. If Tim Sweeney gets the sway and power over the gaming scene he wants Epic would be as bad as Microsoft. They want control, (cont)

@jalpztst20 @CypherSirosicks Although it's not better than Steam. And it could have been, easily. Instead, it launched without basic store features like a shopping cart.

@CypherSirosicks I mean, if Tim really cared he would launch a storefront that's better than Valve and where devs that make heavy use of AI can thrive. Ohh, wait... that's been a thing since 2018 and hasn't moved an inch. 😂

I haven't seen a single comment from Sweeney against Valve that doesn't boil down to: "They're treating their users too well. Why aren't they fucking everyone over like we are. That's not fair >:( grrr"
Wccftech@wccftech

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney believes Valve is irresponsible for forcing AI disclosures on Steam. 🔗 wccf.tech/1kpk4 "I think it's really irresponsible of Valve. They shouldn't do it, because it makes it much, much, much harder for a game developer to have a chance of success. You have to choose from either not using tools that can make you way more productive, and probably failing due to competition that does."

My hottest nuclear take is that IP law is largely the reason we have such anti-competitive tech megacorps today. While my problem is mostly with patent law specifically, the DMCA gave way to much power to corps in policing what they *feel* is copyright infringement.
Grummz@Grummz

It's wild that copyright law only seems to benefit large corporations to sue Grandma's for downloading a song or two, and then gets yeeted as soon as it's inconvenient for AI. Yet here we are. It was decided AI was too important to trifle with such things. But don't you dare download a song yourself, that's still the death penalty.

@iceforeyes I'd be careful there... The drones that buy the same FIFA and Madden game every year only to get farmed for ultimate team packs might disprove your point. 🤣 But yeah, notably PC gamers tend to be more vigilant against corporate shenanigans.

@Mortiel In the case of gamers it is less about how smart we are, and more about the fact that we are "awake" When a person sits on a couch to watch TV eating a snack their brain is off, playing a game requires reflexes problem solving hand/eye coordination etc. Our brains are not off.

@iceforeyes Most consumers are not as dumb as corporations think, they just tolerate a lot so long as it's not blatantly inconvenient. Epic made the mistake of being blatantly inconvenient. 🤣
