"The sky over the port was the color of television tuned to a dead channel." Age is when your favourite books need footnotes.

@Care2much18 The university in Birmingham where I once worked still had the attendance records for Belgian refugees at this time who were having English classes.

Anti-immigration gobshites today reckon refugees weren't fleeing war or famine. Objectively nonsense, given tens of thousands of arrivals from Ukraine, Palestine etc. The warm welcome given by Irish people in 1914 is how people fleeing war and famine should be treated. ☘️

Thousands of Belgian refugees arrived in Ireland in the winter of 1914. I thought it might be interesting to go through newspaper archives, to see where around the country they went and how they were treated on arrival. A thread on that, for anyone interested. /1

@IanDunt That's my YouTube rule - anything that interrupts the video is something I will never buy.

The Paris Olympics was sponsored by Visa. When we were there, they only let us pay with cash or Visa, a pointlessly vindictive form of marketing. I'd never had any opinion on Visa until then. By the end of the evening I'd promised myself to always try to avoid using it.

There should be a word for advertising that makes you less likely to buy the product. Whenever I'm in Euston, being Big-Brother-oppressed by huge ads while searching for the tiny departures screen, I make a silent commitment to always avoid anything they try to sell me.
Rachael Burford@RachaelBurford

Euston is easily the worst station in London. Why is the massive screen just for adverts?? I just want to know what platform my train is going from

@BiteYourBrum I love the markets and think they are amazing (we will miss them when they are swept away by the Smithfield development) but they do pack quite an olfactory wallop.

@ClaireNorth42 Seconding, or thirding Nick’s reply. The Big Blue seems to be shaping up as a good replacement from this fever dream.

In the coming months, I'm gonna start using Instagram more than Twitter. This is a real shame - I've had a wonderful time hanging out with fantastic people on this platform. But alas, it's owned by a man who platforms lies and hatred, and that no longer sits easy with me.

Question for the show: What is something you know about your team through two weeks? Something that is absolutely true and cannot be altered. Stone cold fact.

@Birmingham_81 Amazing. I once met the little boy from the opening train carriage (by then a senior police officer) and was a completely incoherent fan-boy.

@Samfr It’s characteristically - and delightfully - clever, but I genuinely can’t work out if it’s true.

@Superant_1985 @pagep195 "I'll never pay more that 3 digits for a ticket." I don't go to gigs any more, but I saw an in-demand band (The Clash) in 1980 for £3.50 at mid-sized venue. Obviously there's inflation to take into account - but that works out at £15-20 these days. So what is the increase?

@pagep195 I think half of those that do pay, pay for the sake of saying, "I've been". As if it pushes them high in to the echelons of their social circle. There are loads of bands on my bucket list, but I'll never pay more that 3 digits for a ticket.

Fair play to Heaton for calling this out. Obscene ticket prices are becoming the norm. We keep paying, they will keep charging. The premium package, the golden circle, the VIP ‘experience’. Springsteen, Swift, Oasis - doesn’t matter. At the root of it: pure greed.

@James1940 Going through forgotten paper case of my late grandfather's. He was in Normandy leading flail tanks, and the case has his medals, papers (including Eisenhower's DDay letter) and this evocative pencil from France 1944. Gently nibbled.
