@PetitUdy @sciencegirl Always tip with a lottery ticket if you'd never even think of suing the server if she won. A tip is a gift. If you're not willing to give gifts with no strings attached, then they're not really gifts. True giving brings its own rewards. It can be the best feeling in the world. 🥰

@sciencegirl Lesson: Never tip with a lottery ticket unless you’re ready for a decade of lawsuits. Tonda kept the $10M because Alabama courts said gambling contracts are unenforceable. Coworkers, customer, and the state all lost.

A waitress received a lottery ticket as a tip and later won $10 million. The win quickly led to legal disputes—her coworkers claimed the ticket had been shared among staff, while the customer who gave it to her argued there was an agreement to split any winnings. The case ultimately went to court to determine who, legally, owned the prize.

@DimitriTilloi @HeraklesCithare Do we know if they pre-dated their Constantinople perch, or were they made for that? I saw them last year in Venice. The stairs to climb up there are quite steep! 😬

Reuters got DOJ's own records. 4,000 law enforcement jobs cut. National Security Division down 38 percent. Civil rights division down more than half. Drug prosecutions at a 20-year low. 7,000 positions unfilled. A former DOJ employee said they have no idea who handles a major espionage case right now. This is the tough-on-crime record. It's in their own budget documents.

@LegDayReps Racists are always insecure. They need to cling to a group for their identity because they lack self-worth. They put down other people to try to feel better about themselves. They're afraid of everyone who doesn't look like them. Miserable creatures. 🤷🏼‍♀️

On September 15, 1979, President Jimmy Carter entered the Catoctin Mountain Park Run, a 6.2-mile (10K) race organized by his own White House near Camp David in Maryland. Carter had only taken up jogging the previous year, though he trained hard, averaging 40 to 50 miles per week by the summer of 1979. The Catoctin course was notoriously hilly, rated an 8 out of 10 in difficulty by veteran road runners. Carter wore a yellow headband and the number 39 on his T-shirt, starting near the front of the pack. He split his first mile uphill in 8 minutes 25 seconds, then pushed even faster through his second mile in 7:45. He was attempting to cut a full four minutes off his previous best time on the course, pushing from 50 minutes down to 46. Around the four-mile mark, nearing the crest of a steep hill, Carter began to moan and falter, his face turning ashen and his legs going rubbery before a Secret Service agent caught him as he began to fall. Initial fears at the White House were that the 54-year-old president had suffered a heart attack. White House physician Dr. William Lukash diagnosed heat exhaustion, and Carter was given smelling salts and at least one liter of salt water intravenously. Remarkably, about 90 minutes after the collapse, Carter stood at the finish line handing out trophies to the winners. Photos of the ashen, staggering president flashed around the world almost immediately. The images of a faltering Carter became a powerful political metaphor, with commentators drawing direct comparisons to his struggling presidency, suggesting he should step aside in the 1980 race just as he had stepped aside in the footrace. The incident raised questions about his general wellbeing and fitness for office, amplifying doubts that were already circulating as his approval ratings sagged and Democratic challenger Ted Kennedy prepared a primary challenge. The collapse crystallized a broader public narrative that Carter was a man overextended and overwhelmed, personally and politically, becoming one of the most enduring symbolic images of his troubled final years in office. #archaeohistories

@MissLadyLee @giveashitnature Make sure you wash all the salt off of them. I place a rock next to the edge of the bath so tiny creatures have a path from the rock to dry land if they need it. No need for more than one rock - leave room for birds to splash around. Thanks! 🩵

Give A Shit About Nature
Give A Shit About Nature@giveashitnature·
Your birdbath is missing half its potential users. And it's because you're missing a rock. Pollinators and smaller songbirds can't drink from a standard birdbath. The water is too deep, the edge is too slick, and they can't land safely. Bees drown in them. Butterflies avoid them. Chickadees, finches, and warblers wait for a puddle instead. A single large rock in the middle of the birdbath that breaks the water surface turns the whole thing into usable habitat. Now bees can land on the dry top of the rock and drink from the edge. Butterflies can perch. Small birds have a safe resting spot. It costs nothing. It takes thirty seconds. It doubles who uses the birdbath overnight. The things dying of thirst in your yard right now are the ones your birdbath was never built to help.

@giveashitnature I always put a rock in my birdbaths, but I put it to the side, next to the edge. That way, larger birds have the whole middle of the bath to splash around in, and putting it next to the edge provides a pathway from the rock to "dry land" for tiny creatures.

In 2010, the Penobscot River in Maine had fewer than a thousand alewife fish spawning in it. In 2023, it had six million. The Penobscot was once one of the great fisheries of the North Atlantic. Atlantic salmon ran upstream in schools of 50,000 or more. Shad and alewives migrated 100 miles inland. Sturgeon went even farther. The Penobscot Nation had fished these waters for 8,000 years. Starting in the 1820s, Maine built dams on the river for industry. By the 1900s, the runs were almost extinct. In 2004 a coalition of the Penobscot Nation, the state, federal agencies, NGOs, and the dam owners signed an agreement to change the river. In 2012, the Great Works Dam came down. In 2013, the Veazie Dam came down. A stream-like bypass was built around the Howland Dam in 2016. Hydropower production did not decrease. The dam owners increased capacity at six other sites that had less ecological impact. Within a decade the fish came back. Alewives went from near zero to six million. Shad, striped bass, rainbow smelt, sea lamprey, American eel. Atlantic salmon are slower to recover but are returning. The whole coastal food web reassembled itself around the fish it had been built to support. There are roughly 90,000 dams in the United States. Most are obsolete. Most block fish that once sustained ecosystems and tribal nations and commercial fisheries for centuries. We built them over about 150 years. We can remove the obsolete ones in less time than that.

JUST IN: Pope Leo XIV responds to Cardinal Marx — Says Vatican does not approve blessing of same sex couples. Adds a blessing can be given to “all people” like at the end of Mass. Leo states—— “First of all, I believe it is very important to understand that the unity or division of the Church should not revolve around sexual issues. We tend to think that when the Church speaks of morality, the only moral issue is a sexual one. In reality, I believe there are much larger and more important issues—such as justice, equality, the freedom of men and women, and religious freedom—that should take priority over that particular issue. The Holy See has already spoken with the German bishops. The Holy See has made it clear that we do not agree with the formal blessing of couples—in this case, same-sex couples, as you requested—or of couples in irregular situations, beyond what Pope Francis has specifically permitted by saying that all people should receive the blessing. When a priest gives the blessing at the end of Mass, when the Pope gives the blessing at the end of a great celebration like the one we had today, there are blessings for all people. Francis’s famous expression, “everyone, everyone, everyone,” expresses the Church’s conviction that everyone is welcomed, everyone is invited, everyone is invited to follow Jesus, and everyone is invited to seek conversion in their own lives. To go beyond this today, I believe, could cause more disunity than unity, and that we should seek to build our unity on Jesus Christ and on what Jesus Christ teaches. This is my answer to the question.

Archaeo - Histories@archeohistories·
In May 1570, Philip II of Spain married his own niece, Anna of Austria—and even by royal standards, people noticed. She was just 20. He was not only her uncle, but also her former guardian, a man she had known since childhood. But in the world of the Habsburgs, this wasn’t scandal—it was strategy. Power wasn’t meant to spread. It was meant to stay locked inside the family. This was a full uncle-niece marriage, one of the most extreme examples of dynastic inbreeding in European history. And it wasn’t a one-off. The Habsburgs had been tightening their own bloodline for generations—cousins marrying cousins, uncles marrying nieces—because every “outsider” was seen as a political risk. Land, titles, and control of the Spanish Empire were too valuable to dilute. So they kept it all… in the family. But here’s where it gets uncomfortable. This wasn’t just about politics—it had consequences. Over generations, this level of inbreeding compounded, contributing to a growing list of health issues within the dynasty. The most infamous example would come later with Charles II, whose severe physical and cognitive disabilities became a symbol of what happens when power is protected at all costs. By then, the family’s genetic pool had become so narrow that it was already collapsing in on itself. And yet, Philip and Anna’s marriage was considered a success by court standards. She bore him multiple children, including a future king. Publicly, she was praised as obedient, fertile, and devout—the ideal queen. Privately? We don’t get much of her voice. That’s part of the story too. Women like Anna weren’t asked what they wanted. They were positioned—carefully, deliberately—into roles that served dynastic survival. #archaeohistories

@archeohistories Well, this was after his first wife Queen Mary of England died w/o having kids, and then her younger sister Elizabeth I turned down his proposals. So his niece wasn't his initial strategy (taking over England & making it Catholic was!), but he needed *somebody* to have his kids.

Thanksgiving morning, 2019. Rhonda Kessel set a twenty-two-pound frozen turkey on her porch in Bozeman while she unlocked the front door. It rolled off the step. Her driveway had a nine-percent grade. The turkey picked up speed like a bowling ball on fresh ice, crossed the street, and punched a clean dent into the driver's side door of a parked police cruiser. Officer Brandt watched the whole thing from inside the car, coffee mid-sip. The body cam footage hit YouTube by noon. 1.6 million views in four days. A local body shop fixed the cruiser for free in exchange for using the footage in their ad. Rhonda got a $21 municipal damage citation. She framed it next to the turkey thermometer.
