Public health is still something that leaves a lot to be desired in China. China still has issues with tuberculosis for example. China will get there but development is going to be uneven.
Philippe Lemoine@phl43

I constantly criticize China Derangement Syndrome, so you can hardly accuse me of being into China-bashing, but the replies to this are insane. It's just people who either pretend that the same thing is true in the West or claim that it's no big deal if you can't drink tap water.

@KeyTryer Yeah i dont know why people bash ai. Ai make 3d more relevant. I mean with ai the cheapest and efficient way to make 2d animation is via 3d plus ai. Kinda like rock paper scissor but 3d modelling.

@PAstynome @ruima I mean jeff bezos famously said the secret of america success you have somebody who finance for idea and innovation with possibility of success rate only 20 percent.

@ruima Worse, you have people calling it “fake” and saying STEM is all you need.

This is why capital markets are so critical. It’s also what the US does better than any other country. Without it, the US tech sector would look very different.
Rui Ma@ruima

I just listened to Dwarkesh interview of Jensen where he asked about export controls. Jensen said that Anthropic Mythos was trained on a mundane number of chips and that China has no shortage of such capacity plus a lot of high end talent. The conclusion being that research should be globally collaborative and not antagonistic or siloed. My understanding of Chinese AI is somewhat complementary. There are chips. But they are expensive. Chinese investors are unwilling to fund experiments into AGI / ASI. There are only like 2 or 3 commercial players that the industry generally and truly believes with such as their goal. A few others may state they want to do it, but are hamstrung by their ability to fundraise from the market (a much smaller pool of capital vs US companies) or their boards. Maybe sounds silly to some folks outside of China, but shouldn’t to those who have followed me for a long time. I’ve written extensively about how finance shapes innovation, and how there is, relatively speaking, a notable disparity in availability of truly risk-taking capital in the private markets. I just don’t think there is much evidence export controls are a main reason for the successes or failures of AI development in China. What export controls very clearly did though is give the Chinese semiconductor sector a huge boost. And in that I think people really underestimate the competitor that has been created, which was entirely unnecessary. But whatever, probably good for humanity overall to have diversification for such a critical technology. But US really could have monopolized that for the foreseeable future.

LOL, you got exposed to the Japanese service sector which is notorious for rock bottom productivity. All those make work jobs such as 2-4 greeters in the hotel lobbies do much to depress Japan’s productivity. Yeah, their hotels are infamous for terrible tech and low productivity.
Deep Ocean@OceanDeep13054

@PAstynome Japan manufacturing is strong, but in area of my job (hotel ) is weak, like japanese hotel tend to overstaffed and use outdated tech. Which is weird creating high end manufacturing is way harder compare to creating international hotel chain like hilton or H World group.

I’m sorry to disappoint certain nationalists who think Japan is a brothel for Westerners whose only exports are AVs but it’s the only non-Western country that’s capable of making ultra precision machines, chemicals, and scientific instruments.
Phryne Astynome@PAstynome

This is a Swiss company, StarragTornos. German companies that make these machines are Kern and Hermle and you can also find Japanese equivalents with Mitsui Seiki and Yasda. Ultra precision CNC machines. Those three countries are the big three for ultra precision CNC machines.
