Last December, my babe a UK citizen and I planned a romantic vacation in Morocco. The ancient raids and Atlas Mountains had us excited. With only my Nigerian passport and limited travel history (just quick trips to Togo, Ghana, and Benin), I needed a tourist visa while she could enter visa-free. I printed and photocopied every document neatly and submitted at the Moroccan Embassy in Abuja. One week later, it was rejected, they didn’t even collect the visa fee. It was clear they had flagged issues early, probably my short travel record and traveling with a UK partner raising doubts about strong ties to Nigeria. Instead of staying down, I chose to celebrate the season my own way. I headed to Ghana alone no visa needed, just my Nigerian passport, great jollof, beaches, and vibrant Accra energy. It became my solo reset while my babe and I planned our next adventure together. This time, we decided to level up and apply for a Schengen visa to start building real strength into my Nigerian passport. After complications with the French process (the TLScontact center in Abuja had issues due to complaints), we switched to Portugal its stunning coastlines and romantic vibe felt perfect for a couple. I applied through VFS Global in Abuja, paid the appointment/service fee of about ₦58,000 and the visa fee of about ₦146,000. Documents were prepared, biometrics done, and we waited. But the application was rejected. The Portugal embassy/consulate stated they were “scared to give a young guy without family a visa because they worried I might not want to come back” ( the consulate didn’t say this a Nigerian staff told me) That was the core reason insufficient proof of strong ties to Nigeria. As a young single man with limited long-distance travel history and a UK-based girlfriend, my profile raised serious concerns about genuine temporary intent. I’ve told my babe straight: “Just come and marry me so we can move out together.” The constant tourist visa battles are exhausting. Getting married could open a different path perhaps a UK spouse/partner visa route where she sponsors me as a British citizen, or even stronger options for joint travel and settlement. No allow anybody whine you say na only men dey come back Nigeria marry their girlfriends. Women too do it if the love is there.

This is the problem with opinions if you don’t have the experience thru the levels you’re just opining, which is fine…. But $2-3m and a house paid for compared to Elon is like comparing tee ball to Major League Baseball. Or paper planes to space travel Elon has helped thousands of families become millionaires. the millionaire next door you describe will struggle funding their parents assisted living. One major health problem can Bankrupt a 3m household. None lasui. One divorce. No offense but you’re being very naive

Here is a secret for you. After you make your first $2-3 million, pay off your home & have a nice car to drive, there is no difference in the quality of life between you & Elon Musk. Both of you have a limited amount of time on Earth. You have twice if not more than Elon, so you're technically richer than him. A pizza is a pizza whether a billionaire eats it or you do. Money is nothing but digital numbers on a screen. Real life is outdoors. Spending quality time with your family & friends. Become financially independent; that's usually 2-3mil. Have good food. Enjoy friendships. Workout. Relax. That's all there is to life. Greed has no end. Repeat after me: Time is the currency of life. Money is not. The sooner you figure this out, the happier you will be.

In 2018, I connected with this girl on Facebook. We both grew up in Minna, Niger State, but I was in 200 level in Abuja at the time. Our chats were sporadic and mostly cold, she often gave me the cold shoulder with short replies. Then in November 2021, she suddenly slid into my WhatsApp DM, warm and chatty. She laughed at my jokes and showed real interest. We quickly grew close with midnight calls and daily updates about our lives. By January 2022, I asked her out, drawn to her decent, churchy nature and fluent English. She prayed about it and agreed in February. For a while, everything felt good. One night during a deep conversation, I asked her to tell me everything about herself because I truly loved her and saw a future together. If I ever heard something sensitive from someone else which is later confirmed to be true, I said, it would end that day. She opened up: she had done eight abortions. My body weakened instantly. I asked if they were all for one person. She said the first four were for her older first boyfriend, they dated three years, and she aborted four times for him. The last one was at five months; she didn’t know she was pregnant at first, but when she realized, they still went ahead with an injection and something inserted in her vagina. The remaining four abortions were for three different people. Shock, disappointment, and confusion hit me. I didn’t know exactly how to feel, but all the love I had for her died immediately. If she could openly share eight abortions, I felt there must be even more. The trust shattered. A month later, I ended the relationship quietly. I know some will say I asked for the truth but couldn’t take it, yes, I couldn’t. Others might wonder why she was so sincere. But any marriage built on deceit is invalid in my eyes. If I had learned this after marriage, even with children, I would have divorced her.

I have this cousin brother who is much older than me. My dad is only four years older than him, so he feels more like an uncle. He dated his girlfriend for years. When he decided to marry her, he followed our culture: he went to her family with elders, declared his intention, and paid the initial bride price deposit after they accepted. One evening, he returned from work and found her crying in his room. She had a key and full access to his house. When he comforted her and asked what was wrong, she said, “If I tell you, you will cancel the marriage and bring shame to my family.” He reassured her that he would still marry her. Only then did she confess: when she was younger, she had been raped, got pregnant, and gave birth to a boy who was already 12 years old by 2012. She had hidden it from him. My cousin pitied her and didn’t want to shame her family, so he foolishly forgave her and kept the secret. He married her anyway, called her “Mummy,” and gave her full access to everything he owned. In 2023, his 11-year-old son reported that a man was calling his mom “baby” and “my love,”. My cousin monitored her and discovered she was cheating with her boss at work. He confronted them. They didn’t deny it. They later divorced, and he asked her to leave his house. A few months later, she and her boss returned. They told him that his second son the seven year old actually belongs to the boss, not to him. Moral lesson:Marry someone who deserves your love. Never marry out of pity. Pity can blind you and bring years of pain and betrayal.

I am at a stage in life where my main objective is to pass along to others the principles I have learned over the last 60 years that have helped me and that I think can help others. I believe that some of the most important investment principles I can pass along are about what an “All Weather Portfolio” is and how to build such a portfolio. I think these principles are especially valuable during risky times like now. As always, I welcome your questions and thoughts. x.com/RayDalio/statu…
